Active Air Flap Fault on Mini Clubman

I am experiencing an active air flap fault on my 2013 Mini Clubman. The check engine light is illuminated, and the engine is overheating. Could a defective electromechanism be the culprit?

Interesting. I had a similar issue with my Audi A3, although it wasn't exactly the same. Check engine light, car overheating, all that fun. Is the engine reaching operating temperature normally, or is it taking longer than usual? Have you checked the fault code? It should point you directly to the thermal management system, specifically the grille shutter. That's what mine ended up being, anyway.

Did the Audi also throw a fault code related to the active air flap? Was the overheating constant, or only under specific conditions?

Yes, the fault code pointed directly to the grille shutter. As for the overheating, it was more noticeable at lower speeds or when idling. At higher speeds, airflow seemed to compensate somewhat. If you suspect the electromechanism, it's probably best to get it properly diagnosed. A workshop visit may be necessary.

Acknowledged. Thanks for the insight. The diagnosis was confirmed. The active air flap electromechanism was indeed defective. Repair cost came to 590€. Replaced it. The car is fine now.
