A7 EGR Failure Shows Multiple Warning Signs

Had almost the exact same problem with my A7 last year. The vacuum leak diagnosis was spot on, the EGR valve was completely clogged with carbon deposits causing all those symptoms. My automotive repair shop found some additional issues with the intake manifold that needed attention too. Would you mind sharing what the repair ended up costing you? Just curious if prices have changed much since my fix. Also, have you noticed any other issues pop up since the repair? Sometimes these diesel engine problems can cascade if not caught early enough.

After getting it properly diagnosed, the repair cost came to 355 Euro for the complete EGR valve replacement. The investment was worth it, all those initial problems with rough idle and reduced power cleared up immediately after the fix. The check engine light is now off and the engine runs smoothly again, especially during acceleration. The diesel engine performance has been completely restored since fixing the defective EGR valve. No more black smoke or that concerning hissing sound that pointed to the vacuum leak. Fuel consumption is back to normal levels too. Its been about 4 months since the repair and no related issues have surfaced. Regular maintenance and keeping an eye on engine performance helps catch these problems before they create a chain reaction of failures. The carbon buildup that jammed the EGR valve can definitely cause cascading problems if left unchecked, but catching it when we did prevented any additional engine damage.

After dealing with the EGR issues for several weeks, I finally got it sorted at a proper shop. The total repair came to 780 Euro, which included the new EGR valve, intake manifold cleaning, and a full diagnostics run. More than I initially hoped to spend, but the vehicle emissions are now perfect and that worrying rough idle is completely gone. The mechanic showed me the old EGR valve, it was completely caked with carbon. No wonder the check engine light was on and the engine was struggling. They also found and fixed a small vacuum leak that was causing that hissing sound. Three weeks after the repair, my A7 runs like new again. Fuel consumption is back to normal and the engine pulls strong with no smoke. Really glad I got it fixed before it caused more serious engine damage. The whole experience taught me not to wait when these kinds of symptoms first appear.

Recently dealt with nearly identical symptoms on an A6 3.0 TFSI. The EGR valve was completely stuck open, causing excessive exhaust gas recirculation. This created the same issues, power loss, smoke, and unstable idle. The hissing sound typically indicates a vacuum leak around the EGR system. In my case, the carbon buildup was severe enough that cleaning alone wasnt sufficient. The entire EGR valve needed replacement along with cleaning of the intake manifold. This is a serious issue that can damage the catalytic converter if left untreated due to improper fuel mixture and increased vehicle emissions. The symptoms will continue to worsen, potentially leading to complete power loss. The repair requires specialized diagnostic equipment to properly test the EGR system function and verify proper operation after replacement. A complete fix should include: EGR valve replacement, Intake manifold cleaning, System pressure testing, Computer adaptation reset, Emissions system verification Would strongly suggest having this addressed soon to prevent further engine damage and emissions system complications.
