A3 Hybrid Stalling: Failed Coil Pack Warning Signs

My A3 hybrid keeps stalling and jerking with engine hesitation. The check engine light just came on, and the engine runs really rough, especially at idle. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so looking for advice before taking it in again. Pretty sure it might be the ignition coil, but want to hear from others who dealt with similar symptoms. Car specs: 2021 A3 hybrid with 14909 km. Anyone faced this and can recommend what to check or look out for?

Had similar issues with my 2018 A4 hybrid last month. The engine hesitation and rough idle pointed to ignition system problems. After diagnostic testing, it revealed multiple issues: faulty ignition coils and worn spark plugs causing unusual misfires. The main problem was corroded connections between the ignition coils and spark plugs, leading to intermittent electrical contact. The engine stalling occurred because the computer was getting inconsistent signals from these components. This is a serious issue requiring immediate attention, as continued driving can damage the catalytic converter. The repair involved: Testing all ignition coils, Replacing damaged coils, Installing new spark plugs, Cleaning all electrical connections, Resetting engine computer codes When the ignition system fails on hybrids, its particularly problematic because it affects both the combustion engine and the transition to electric power. Would suggest getting it checked soon to prevent additional damage to other components.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had almost identical symptoms on my A3 last year, rough running, stalling and coil failure causing constant misfires. Vehicle diagnostics confirmed bad coils and plugs. Just curious, do you remember the total repair cost for your fix? And has everything been running smoothly since the repair? Mine has been fine but I had to go back once for a small engine stalling issue they missed initially.

Following up on your question, yes, everything has been running perfectly since getting it fixed last week. The repair bill came to 95 Euro for fixing the faulty connection between the coil pack and plug. The mechanic spotted the defective ignition coil right away and corrected the issue without needing to replace the entire unit. No more check engine light, engine stalling, or misfires since the repair. The idle is smooth now and the transition between electric and combustion power works flawlessly. Good thing we caught it early, leaving ignition system problems unfixed can lead to more expensive repairs down the line. Unlike your situation, I fortunately didnt need to go back for any follow-up fixes. The initial repair resolved all the symptoms completely. When these coil issues are properly diagnosed and fixed the first time, they typically dont cause recurring problems.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a new mechanic yesterday who specializes in hybrid systems. The diagnostic showed two failing coil packs and corroded spark plugs. Total repair came to 450 Euro including parts and labor. The mechanic was thorough and showed me the damaged components. Engine hesitation is completely gone now and it runs perfectly smooth. The transition between electric and gas power is much better too. They even cleaned all the electrical connections and reset the computer as a preventive measure. Big difference from my last mechanic who just kept resetting the check engine light without fixing the actual coil failure. Much happier with this service and no more engine stalling issues. Definitely worth getting a second opinion from someone who knows these systems well.
