2019 Toyota Etios diesel engine: unsteady idling, exhaust odor and suspected EGR valve defect

Hey guys, I'm driving a 2019 Toyota Etios with a diesel engine and almost 70,000 KM on the clock. My car has a few problems: the check engine light is on, the engine just dies, it feels weak overall and is unstable when idling. There is also a strong smell of exhaust fumes and the whole car shakes when stationary. I had a rather bad experience the last time I went to the garage - I don't want that again! I think it's the EGR valve. Have you ever had a similar experience and can give me some advice on what I should look out for at the garage? Thank you very much!

Hi buddy, I drive a 2016 Toyota Camry and had a similar problem. It does sound like the EGR valve could be faulty or stuck. It can happen if the valve carbon deposits are not cleaned properly. Last time I was at the garage, the EGR valve had to be completely replaced. The problem was more serious than originally thought as it was affecting other parts of the engine. This is not cold coffee, you need to know. In your case, it's important that the garage checks the vehicle thoroughly first. They should read out the fault memory and carry out a visual inspection to make sure that no other parts are affected. It would be best if they also ask about cleaning the valve and of course replacing it if it really is faulty. Hope it helps and good luck with the repair! Keep at it and don't let it get you down.

Hey, thanks for the advice! It really sounds like you've been through a trip like this before. Do you remember how much you paid for the full repair back then? Has anything else happened to your Camry since then that's worth mentioning, or has it been running like clockwork ever since? Thanks again!

Hey, you're welcome! Yes, I remember very well how much I spent. All that fun with the EGR valve cost me €355. A chunk of money, but what are you going to do if you don't want to just stop, right? Since visiting the mechanic, my Camry has been running like a champ again and the functional fault in the EGR valve has been completely rectified. There have been no other incidents to speak of since then. So I would say it was worth it. I hope this helps you and that your Etios will soon be running smoothly again!

Oh man, 355€ is a lot of money, but when it's running again, you can probably invest it. Great to hear that your Camry has been on the road since then without any further problems! Thanks for your detailed information and encouragement. Now I'm a lot smarter and can go to the garage feeling better. I also hope my Etios will soon be running like before! Thanks again and drive carefully!
