Thanks for your detailed response! My Z3 has 37649 KM on the clock and just had its last service done. The issue actually started gradually over the past few weeks, at first, I barely noticed it, but now it's quite obvious. Interestingly, it seems worse on the driver's side, especially when going over speed bumps. Your experience with the wiring harness issue is really helpful. That could explain why I'm getting the warning light too. Good to hear it wasn't too expensive to fix in your case. I'll definitely have my mechanic check the wiring connections first before looking into more complex issues. Hopefully, it's something similarly straightforward with mine. Really appreciate you sharing your experience!
Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your Z3. After reading about the symptoms being worse on the driver's side, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I experienced with my M3. Actually, funny enough, my issue also started gradually and was more noticeable on the driver's side too! I remember specifically because I kept thinking I had a flat tire at first. The way you described it getting worse over weeks is exactly how mine played out. Since you mentioned having a recent service, I'd suggest getting the mechanic to specifically check the wiring near the wheel well on the driver's side. In my case, they found that the constant flexing of the wiring harness in that area had caused the insulation to wear down. The recent service might have inadvertently disturbed something that was already starting to fail. The nice thing is that if it is the wiring like in my case, it's a pretty quick fix. My car was in and out in a couple of hours. The warning light disappeared immediately after the repair, and the suspension went back to its normal responsive self. Let me know what your mechanic finds, I'm really curious if it turns out to be the same issue!
Thanks so much for the follow-up! That's actually really reassuring to hear that your symptoms matched mine so closely, especially with the driver's side issue. I never thought about the service possibly disturbing an already-weak wire, that makes a lot of sense. I've actually just booked my car in for next week. I specifically mentioned the wiring harness and wheel well area to the mechanic based on your experience. He seemed to think it was a good place to start looking. It's such a relief to know it might be a relatively quick and straightforward fix. I was worried I'd need to replace the entire suspension system! I'll definitely update you once I get the car back and let you know if it turns out to be the same wiring issue. Really appreciate all your help and detailed explanations, it's made me feel much more confident about getting this sorted. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience with me!
Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs, I own a 2002 BMW M3 and previously had a Z4. Your suspension issue sounds very familiar. I had a similar problem with my M3 where the electronic damping control wasn't working properly. Turned out it was just a faulty wiring connection to one of the damper sensors. My mechanic found the cable was worn and had a poor connection. The fix was pretty straightforward, they replaced the wiring harness and connections. Cost me about 95 Euro and solved the problem completely. The car went back to handling bumps like it should. Before I can help more specifically, could you share: How many miles/kilometers on your Z3? Did this start suddenly or gradually? Do you notice the issue more on one side of the car? Those details would help determine if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Let me know!
