Weak Lancer Blower? Fix That Dying Ventilation System

Hey everyone, my 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Diesel (86K km) has been giving me trouble with the ventilation system. The blower barely pushes any air through the vents, regardless of the speed setting. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with a similar blower issue on their Lancer? If so, what was the fix, and can you recommend a trustworthy mechanic who knows these cars well? Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I had the exact same issue with my 2012 Mitsubishi ASX Diesel last summer (at around 92K km). The blower motor was definitely shot, started with weak airflow and got progressively worse over a couple of weeks. My garage found that the blower motor resistor had failed, but they also discovered the motor itself was worn out and had debris inside. They had to replace both the blower motor and the resistor pack. It wasn't a hugely complex job, but getting to the parts was a bit tricky as they're tucked behind the dashboard. Took about 2-3 hours to complete the whole thing. Not really a serious issue in terms of car safety, but definitely annoying when you need proper ventilation or A/C. Just make sure they check both components, sometimes mechanics only replace the resistor when the motor itself is the main problem. I'd definitely get it fixed sooner rather than later. The weak airflow will only get worse, and you don't want to be stuck without proper ventilation or defrosting when you really need it.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds very similar to what I'm dealing with. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you had any other ventilation issues pop up?

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, yeah, I got the blower issue sorted at the mechanic I mentioned. The total bill came to 365€, which covered replacing the faulty blower motor. Since getting it fixed, the ventilation's been working like a charm, honestly, I'd forgotten how good the airflow was supposed to be! It's been about 8 months now, and I haven't had any other ventilation problems pop up. The repair job was totally worth it, no more struggling with weak air flow or dealing with foggy windows. The mechanic actually showed me the old motor, and it was pretty gunked up with debris, which explained the poor performance. Let me know if you end up getting yours fixed, would be interesting to hear if you had the same underlying issue with your Lancer. The symptoms sure sound identical to what I dealt with on my ASX!

Thanks for the update! Just got back from the mechanic yesterday actually. You were spot on, it was the blower motor! Ended up paying around 340€, which wasn't as bad as I'd feared. The mechanic I found was really great, showed me the old motor too, and it was in rough shape with all sorts of dust and debris stuck in there. What a difference now! The air just blasts through like it's supposed to. Can't believe I put up with that weak airflow for so long. The mechanic mentioned it's pretty common in these models, so I'm glad I got it sorted before winter hits. Really appreciate your help and sharing your experience. It definitely made me feel more confident about getting it fixed. Think I've found my new go-to mechanic too, way better than my old one. Thanks again for all the advice!
