Weak EV Lights & Start: Mokka's Battery Mystery Unfolds

Dim or flickering lights

|

Weak battery when starting the engine

Hey everyone, had a frustrating experience with my mechanic recently, and now my 2021 Vauxhall Mokka (Electric) is acting up. The engine's struggling to start, and all the lights are really weak and flickering. With almost 99K km on the clock, I'm worried it might be an undervoltage issue. Has anyone dealt with similar problems? Would love to hear about your experiences and maybe get some recommendations for reliable mechanics who actually know their way around electric vehicles. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I had a similar issue with my 2019 Vauxhall Corsa-e last month. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, weak lights, trouble starting up, the whole deal. Took it to my regular garage and turns out it wasn't just a simple battery drain. The main battery management system was acting up, which was causing the 12V auxiliary battery to discharge faster than normal. They had to recalibrate the BMS and replace the aux battery. It's not super serious if caught early, but definitely needs proper attention from someone who knows EVs. I'd recommend finding a garage that specifically deals with electric vehicles. My mechanic mentioned these symptoms are pretty common in electric Vauxhalls once they hit higher mileage. Fixed now and running perfectly, but took them a couple of days to sort it out properly. Make sure whoever looks at it has proper EV certification, it makes a difference.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the BMS issue, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. My symptoms are identical to what you described. Do you remember roughly how much you had to pay for the whole repair job? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks? I'm definitely going to look for an EV-certified mechanic now. Thanks again for the tip!

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After taking it to the EV-certified mechanic I mentioned, they confirmed it was indeed an undervoltage issue. Got it all sorted out, they replaced the battery which was completely drained and faulty. The whole thing set me back 290€, which honestly wasn't as bad as I feared! Since the repair, my Corsa-e has been running like a dream, no more flickering lights or starting problems. It's been about a month now, and I haven't noticed any weird quirks or issues. Honestly, it feels like I'm driving a new car again! Really glad I could help point you in the right direction with the EV-certified mechanic suggestion. These electric Vauxhalls are great cars, but they definitely need someone who knows what they're doing when things go wrong. Let me know how you get on with yours!

Just wanted to update everyone on my Mokka situation! Finally got it sorted last week at an EV-certified garage. You were spot on, it was the battery management system acting up, just like your Corsa-e. Ended up paying about 310€ for the whole job, including a new auxiliary battery and BMS recalibration. A bit more than what you paid, but I guess prices vary by location. The mechanic was super professional and really knew his stuff about EVs. Car's running perfectly now, no more flickering lights or starting issues. Such a relief! Really glad I asked here and got your advice about finding an EV specialist. Saved me from potentially making things worse at my regular mechanic. Thanks again for all the help! If anyone else runs into similar issues with their electric Vauxhall, definitely go straight to an EV-certified mechanic. Lesson learned!
