VW Up Sunroof & Blind Completely Frozen, Fix Guide

Having issues with my 2014 VW Up sunroof operation. The sunblind is completely stuck and wont move in either direction. Same for the convertible top, totally frozen. Suspect its a sunroof initialization error but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with this problem before? Really interested in hearing about workshop repair experiences and typical costs. Also wondering if there are any common fixes the shop usually performs for this type of automobile sunroof issue. Not looking to DIY, just want to know what to expect when I take it in.

I had a similar sunroof control issue with my 2012 VW Polo. As someone with moderate experience working on cars, I can relate to your sunroof troubleshooting situation. The symptoms were identical, complete failure of the sunroof operation and sunblind movement. After attempting basic fixes like checking fuses, I took it to a workshop since sunroof systems can be quite complex. The diagnosis revealed a control module error that required recoding. The technician performed a complete initialization of the vehicle sunroof system and reprogrammed the control unit. Total cost was 75€ for the coding work, which solved the issue completely. Before suggesting more specific solutions, could you share: Any error messages on the dashboard? Did the problem start suddenly or gradually? Can you hear the motor trying to work when pressing controls? Have you recently had any electrical work done on the car? Car sunroof problems often stem from either mechanical or electrical issues, so these details would help narrow down the cause and provide more targeted advice based on my experience.

Had my latest service at 102000km and can confirm both motor and electronics were checked. To answer your questions: No error messages showing, problem started gradually over 2-3 days until complete failure, and no sound from motor when using sunroof controls. No recent electrical work done. The sunroof calibration process you mentioned interests me, my mechanic didnt try this during the last check. Wondering if a simple sunroof reset might work before going for the full control module replacement route. Been maintaining all service records and this is the first sunroof-related issue. Could water damage be a factor? We did have heavy rains recently.

The gradual failure you described matches exactly what happened with my VW Polo. Since no error messages are showing and there is no motor sound, this reinforces my initial thought about the control module. Water exposure could definitely be a contributing factor to sunroof system issues. After heavy rains, moisture can affect the electrical connections and control units. In my case, the technician found slight corrosion on some connectors near the sunroof control module. Before replacing any parts, I would strongly recommend trying a sunroof reset procedure. The calibration worked for me after my system showed similar symptoms, complete silence, no movement, and a gradual decline in function. The sunroof initialization process is much cheaper than replacing components. Based on the service history you shared, this sounds like an electrical rather than mechanical issue. Modern car sunroof systems rely heavily on proper initialization and coding. The lack of motor noise typically points to a control issue rather than mechanical failure. If the reset doesnt work, the next step would likely be diagnostic testing of the control module, which runs about 50-100€ at most shops. Much better to try this before considering more expensive repairs.

Thanks for the detailed information about the diagnostic testing. I feel more confident now about what to expect at the shop. Given your experience with a similar VW model, I'll definitely ask them to try the sunroof reset and initialization first before jumping into more expensive repairs. The water damage theory makes sense since the issues started right after those heavy rains. A control module diagnosis sounds like a reasonable next step if the reset doesn't work. 50-100€ for testing isn't too bad compared to a full sunroof mechanism replacement. I'll book it in next week and make sure to mention the gradual failure symptoms and lack of motor noise. Really hoping it's just a sunroof calibration issue that can be sorted with a reset rather than needing major sunroof troubleshooting or repairs. I appreciate you walking me through what to expect, helps take some of the stress out of the repair process. I'll update once I know more about what the shop finds.
