VW Touran Oil Pressure Issue Risks Engine Damage

My Touran diesel started making loud engine noises and the oil pressure warning light came on. The engine oil was changed 2 months ago and levels are good, but Im worried about potential oil pump failure causing these issues. The car runs rough at idle. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their VW? Its a 2017 model with 19386km on the clock. Last mechanic visit was disappointing so looking for advice on what to check and where to get it properly diagnosed. Could low oil pressure be damaging my engine bearings while I drive?

Had similar issues on my 2014 VW Sharan 2.0 TDI. The oil pressure warning combined with rough idle pointed to a failing oil pump. An oil pressure sensor test confirmed critically low oil pressure despite correct oil levels. The oil pump failure was causing insufficient oil circulation through the engine bearings and other vital components. This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention since continuous driving with low oil pressure can destroy engine bearings and lead to complete engine failure. The repair involved replacing the entire oil pump assembly since internal components had excessive wear. Found metal particles in the engine oil during inspection, indicating some bearing damage had already occurred. The repair also included cleaning the oil passages and installing a new oil pressure sensor as preventive measure. My advice: Stop driving immediately if experiencing oil pressure warnings combined with engine noise. Have it towed to a specialized VW workshop for proper diagnosis. The oil pump is critical for engine lubrication and any compromise in oil pressure can cause catastrophic engine damage. Make sure they check: Oil pressure sensor functionality, Actual oil pressure readings at different RPMs, Oil pump condition and operation, Oil passages for blockages, Engine bearing wear, Metal particles in engine oil

Thanks for sharing your experience. This sounds exactly like what I am dealing with on my Touran right now. Really helpful to know the oil pump was the culprit in your case. Since the oil pressure warning light started, I have also noticed metal particles during my last oil change which is quite concerning. Did you remember roughly how much the complete repair cost? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the oil pump replacement or have you noticed any other issues? I think I will follow your advice and get it towed rather than risk further engine bearing damage from the low oil pressure. Better safe than sorry with these types of oil leakage problems.

Good to report back. Got the repair done and it completely resolved the oil pressure warning and rough idle issues. The workshop confirmed it was indeed the oil pump failure, just as I suspected. Total repair bill came to 755€ which included replacing the defective oil pump assembly and cleaning the oil passages. Running perfectly smooth for several months now with proper oil pressure readings. No more metal particles in the oil during subsequent checks, and engine bearing wear stopped progressing once normal oil circulation was restored. For anyone else experiencing similar symptoms: the oil viscosity was correct and oil filter clogged was ruled out. The oil pump was simply worn beyond specs, causing insufficient pressure. Worth every cent to fix it properly rather than risk catastrophic engine damage from continued low oil pressure operation.

Thanks everyone for the helpful feedback. I finally got my Touran properly diagnosed and fixed. The mechanic confirmed the oil pump had failed, causing the low pressure warnings and rough running. They found significant metal particles in the oil, indicating some engine bearing wear had already started. The full repair ended up costing 890€ including the new oil pump, cleaning all oil passages, and replacing the oil pressure sensor. Not cheap but worth it to save the engine from complete failure. They also did a thorough oil system flush to remove any remaining metal particles. Car runs perfectly smooth now with normal oil pressure readings. The engine noise is completely gone and idle is stable again. Really glad I had it towed in rather than continuing to drive it. The mechanic said driving any longer with failing oil pressure could have destroyed the engine bearings completely. For anyone with similar symptoms, get it checked immediately and dont risk driving with oil pressure warnings. Now I know why they call it the lifeblood of the engine.
