Last service was actually just 2 months ago at 97000km and I can confirm that during that service they did a complete fuel filter replacement. The issue started appearing shortly after. Since the symptoms got worse yesterday, I had it checked today and the mechanic found that a sensor in the fuel pressure regulator was defective, causing erratic fuel delivery and engine stalling issues. Turns out my initial suspicion about the fuel filter heater was incorrect. The faulty sensor caused similar symptoms but was affecting the entire fuel system performance. The repair should be completed tomorrow.

Thanks for the update on your Touareg. Interesting that your issue turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator sensor, these can definitely mimic fuel filter heater problems. I had similar misleading symptoms with mine. Makes sense that the problems started after the filter replacement. Sometimes disturbing components during maintenance can expose or trigger other underlying issues in the fuel line system. Had this happen when my sensor started acting up too. The engine stalling and power loss match exactly what I experienced before my repair. Once fixed, the cold start performance improved dramatically and fuel consumption returned to normal. Your symptoms line up perfectly with a faulty pressure regulator sensor. The repair cost on mine was around 280€ including parts and labor. The shop needed about 4 hours total to complete the work since they had to test the entire fuel delivery system to ensure no other components were affected. Good call getting it checked quickly when symptoms worsened. These issues can compound and potentially damage other fuel system components if left unchecked. Let us know how the car runs after the repair is complete. Should be a noticeable improvement in overall performance and fuel efficiency.

Current mileage is 98500km now. Thanks for sharing your repair details, interesting to hear a wiring issue can cause similar symptoms. The workshop called me this afternoon to confirm the repair is done. The final diagnosis was spot on, faulty fuel pressure regulator sensor. Total repair cost came to 265€ including parts and labor. They also inspected the wiring harness and other fuel system components while they were at it, all checked out fine. Car is running perfectly now. The rough idle is completely gone, cold start performance is back to normal, and I can already tell the fuel efficiency has improved. They did a test drive to confirm everything and ran another diagnostic scan that showed all systems working properly. Really glad I brought it in when the symptoms got worse rather than waiting. The mechanic mentioned the same thing about potential cascading issues if these fuel system problems go unchecked. Definitely learned my lesson about getting strange engine behavior checked out promptly. Makes for a good reminder that initial symptoms can be misleading, what seems like one component can actually be something completely different in the fuel system.

As someone with decent hands-on experience with diesel engines, I dealt with almost identical symptoms on my 2015 VW Touareg TDI. The rough idle and power loss symptoms match exactly what I experienced. Initially thought it was a clogged fuel filter, but the workshop diagnosed it as a faulty wiring connection to the fuel filter heater. The symptoms were most noticeable during cold starts, leading to inconsistent fuel delivery through the fuel line system. The repair involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Testing the fuel filter heater circuit, Replacing damaged wiring and connector, System reset and testing Total cost was 95€ and the fix resolved all issues, no more rough idle, power returned to normal, and fuel consumption improved significantly. The entire repair took about 2 hours. For a more accurate assessment of your situation, could you share: Current mileage, When you last changed the fuel filter, Whether you notice any specific driving conditions that make symptoms worse, Any other warning lights besides check engine These fuel system issues can cascade if left unaddressed, so getting an accurate diagnosis is important. The fuel filter heater plays a crucial role in cold weather performance, particularly in diesel engines.
