VW Tiguan Loses Power: Intake Manifold Issue Warning

My VW Tiguan 2010 diesel is showing multiple concerning symptoms, the engine performance has dropped significantly with rough running and jerking during acceleration. There is also a noticeable hissing sound under load and fuel consumption has increased. The reduced power is quite obvious. I suspect an issue with the intake manifold flap control but would like to confirm before heading to a workshop. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and had them fixed? Would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. The engine light has not come on yet, despite these issues with airflow control and performance.

I had nearly identical issues with my 2012 VW Passat diesel. With some experience working on VWs, I recognized these symptoms immediately as they match what I dealt with last year. The rough running, reduced power, and hissing sound perfectly match the symptoms I experienced. The manifold flap control system was indeed the culprit. After dealing with engine misfire and jerky acceleration for about 2 weeks, I took it to my regular workshop. The diagnosis confirmed a faulty intake manifold flap control unit. The repair involved replacing the entire flap control assembly, which resolved all symptoms. Total cost was 465€ including parts and labor. The fuel consumption returned to normal and the engine ran smoothly again after the fix. To provide more specific advice about your situation, could you share: Current mileage on your Tiguan, How long have these symptoms been present, Whether the symptoms get worse when the engine is cold or warm, Any diagnostic codes, even without an engine light These details would help determine if your issue matches mine exactly or if there might be other factors to consider. Remember that continuing to drive with these symptoms risks additional damage to other engine components, even if the engine light hasnt activated yet.

I had my last service at 96715km and the symptoms started about 2 weeks after that. Yes, the engine definitely runs rougher when cold and gradually improves as it warms up, though the reduced power issue remains constant. Just checked with a borrowed OBD scanner and got P2015 code related to intake manifold runner position sensor. The airflow control issues seem very similar to what you described with your Passat. The flap control problems and engine performance decrease are identical to your experience. Good to know the repair cost was reasonable at 465€. Will get it checked soon to prevent any additional engine damage. The hissing sounds exactly like what you mentioned, most noticeable under load during acceleration. Thanks for confirming this matches your symptoms.

Thanks for the additional details. The P2015 code and symptoms perfectly match what I experienced with my Passat. The correlation between cold running issues and the intake manifold flap control problem is a classic sign. Since your symptoms started after the service, have the workshop check if the flap control actuator might have been disturbed during maintenance. In my case, the flap control mechanism had accumulated carbon deposits, causing the runner position sensor to fail. The engine performance issues and hissing noise disappeared completely after the repair. Make sure they check the entire intake system while replacing the flap control unit, in my case, they also cleaned the intake manifold to prevent future problems. Just for reference, my repair took about 3 hours. The improved fuel consumption and smooth engine operation after the fix made the 465€ cost worthwhile. Would recommend getting it fixed soon, as the rough running during cold starts can lead to increased wear on other engine components. The airflow control issues you describe are textbook symptoms of this common VW problem. Once fixed, you should notice immediate improvement in both power delivery and engine smoothness.

Your VW 2010 Tiguan symptoms sound spot on, got the P2015 code just like their Passat case. The cold start issues definitely confirm what I suspected about the intake manifold flap control being the culprit. The repair cost of 465€ seems reasonable considering labor and parts. My scan showed what was wrong and the flap control and airflow issues match their experience perfectly. Being 2 weeks after my service makes me wonder if something got knocked during maintenance. The hissing noise and engine performance drop is exactly what they described. At least now I know what needs fixing. Good thing I checked rather than keep driving with compromised airflow control. Will book it in for repair this week before any additional engine damage occurs. The rough cold running and intake manifold problems need sorting soon. Nice to get confirmation from someone who had the identical symptoms fixed successfully. Hoping for the same quick 3-hour repair turnaround and return to smooth running they experienced.
