VW Taos Starting Issues Linked to Faulty Ignition Switch

My 2021 VW Taos keeps stalling and wont start properly. When I turn the ignition key, the engine either fails to start completely or starts roughly and then dies. Sometimes it runs poorly before shutting off. Already checked the battery and fuel level, both are fine. The ignition switch feels a bit different than usual, slightly loose when turning. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms and got it fixed? Really interested in repair experiences and what parts needed replacement. Could a faulty ignition switch be the culprit, or should I look elsewhere? The problem seems to be getting worse over time.

Had the exact same issue with my 2019 VW T-Cross last winter, and I have some experience working on basic car repairs. The symptoms match perfectly, trouble with the engine start, dashboard lights acting weird, and that loose feeling in the ignition switch. After checking several possibilities, it turned out to be a blown fuse connected to the ignition system. The workshop found it during diagnosis, and replacing the faulty fuse resolved all the starting problems. Total repair cost was 52€ including labor. Before the fix, I also noticed the starter motor would sometimes make unusual sounds, which was actually a symptom of the fuse problem affecting the electrical system. To help diagnose your case more accurately, could you share: Are there any warning lights on your dashboard when this happens? Does the starter motor make any clicking sounds? How long has this been happening? Have you noticed any electrical issues with other systems? While the symptoms sound similar, its best to get a proper diagnosis since starting problems can have multiple causes. A loose ignition switch could definitely be related, but lets rule out simpler issues first.

Mileage: 124919km, last serviced 2 months ago Thanks for sharing your experience. My dashboard shows no warning lights during these episodes. The starter motor makes a normal sound when I key turn, not clicking. This started about 2 weeks ago and gets worse each time I drive. The car electronics seem fine otherwise, lights, radio, windows all work normally. Only the ignition system acts up. Just noticed the ignition coil connector looks a bit corroded, which might explain the rough starts and stalling. Appreciate the fuse tip, will definitely check that. The starting issues do seem quite similar to what you described, though my ignition switch feels more loose than yours did. Planning to have both the switch and ignition coil inspected since they appear to be the most likely culprits.

Thanks for those extra details. The corrosion you spotted on the ignition coil connector caught my attention, as that could definitely cause your symptoms. In my T-Cross case, while the fuse was the main culprit, I also had the technician clean some corrosion from the electrical connections while doing the repair. The fact your mileage is higher and the ignition switch feels notably loose suggests you might be dealing with more than just my fuse issue. The combination of a worn ignition switch and corroded connections often creates these kinds of starting problems. When I had mine fixed, the mechanic explained that car ignition systems are particularly sensitive to both mechanical wear and electrical connection issues. What worked in my situation was having the whole ignition system checked, not just the fuse but all components. The total diagnostic and repair ended up being around 250€, but it fixed both the immediate problem and prevented future issues. Since your car electronics are working fine otherwise, this really points to an ignition-specific problem rather than a broader electrical issue. Would suggest getting both that corroded connector and the loose ignition switch checked soon, as these problems typically worsen quickly with continued use.

My issues seem more serious than a blown fuse. The symptoms have been getting worse each day, and what you mentioned about ignition system sensitivity makes sense. The car acts exactly as you described, trouble starting and unusual stalling. After checking the ignition coil connector again, the corrosion looks pretty bad. The ignition switch definitely feels looser than normal when I turn the key. Since these starting issues are getting more frequent, I scheduled a repair appointment for tomorrow morning. The good news is my car electronics work perfectly otherwise. No weird dashboard lights or clicking sounds like in your case. Still, that 250€ repair cost you mentioned seems reasonable if it fixes both the corroded connections and worn ignition switch. Better to address it now before I end up stranded somewhere. Thanks for walking me through your experience. Having some direction on what to check really helped narrow down the likely causes. Will update once I know what the actual problem was.
