VW Suran Fan Motor Issue Causes Dangerous Overheating

My engine keeps running hot and I suspect the electric fan is not working properly anymore. When idling, the temperature gauge climbs higher than usual. The temperature control system seems to struggle especially in slow traffic. Looking for advice from others who had similar fan motor issues. Car details: 2013 VW Suran Spacefox, gasoline engine, 78403km. Should I try fixing the electric motor myself or take it to a mechanic after my last disappointing repair experience?

Had the same cooling system problem on my 2010 VW CrossFox last summer. The radiator fan stopped working during idle, causing overheating just like your case. Found the electric fan motor was fine, but the connection plug had corroded pins causing intermittent operation. Faulty electrical connections are common failure points in the cooling system. The mechanic cleaned and repinned the connector, then applied dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion. This was not a serious repair but required proper diagnostic equipment to verify the electric motor function and trace the connection issue. Going the DIY route risks misdiagnosing the real problem since fan issues can stem from multiple causes, blown fuses, damaged wiring, failed temperature sensors or the fan control module itself. A professional can properly test the entire cooling system to pinpoint whether its truly the fan motor or something else causing the temperature spikes. The diagnostic work is worth it to avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the cooling system repair. The corrosion issue makes a lot of sense given the symptoms. My fan motor problem turned out to be more serious, the entire fan assembly needed replacement since the bearings were shot. Vehicle overheating became really concerning before I got it fixed. Would you mind sharing what the connector repair cost you? In my case the parts and labor came to around 400€, which seemed steep but the temperature control has been perfect since then. Curious if you had any other cooling-related problems pop up afterwards? The mechanic mentioned I should keep an eye on the coolant level as a precaution.

Just followed up on my earlier repair experience with the electric fan issue. Happy to report the connector fix was relatively inexpensive at 95€ total, which covered both diagnostics and repair. The mechanic found a damaged plug connection causing the fan malfunction, similar to what you initially suspected with your unit. Engine cooling has been flawless since getting the electrical connection sorted out. The vehicle overheating concerns disappeared completely after the repair. No other cooling system problems have surfaced in the months following the fix. The temperature control remains stable even during extended idle periods now. Your 400€ repair sounds reasonable considering you needed the complete fan assembly replaced. Bad bearings definitely require full unit replacement rather than just fixing connections like in my case. The mechanic's advice about monitoring coolant levels is good preventive maintenance practice for any cooling system work. Good to hear your temperature issues are resolved. Getting proper diagnosis and repair of the electric fan was definitely the right call rather than attempting DIY troubleshooting with these complex cooling components.

Thanks everyone for the helpful feedback. I wanted to share how my repair experience turned out. After getting tired of the engine cooling problems, I took it to a different mechanic who actually found the radiator fan assembly was completely worn out. The vehicle overheating was worse than I initially thought. The temperature control would go haywire especially when stuck in traffic. The mechanic showed me how the fan bearings were completely shot, making horrible noises when spinning. Getting the entire electric fan unit replaced cost 400€ but it was worth every cent. The cooling system works perfectly now, no more temperature spikes or overheating concerns. The new mechanic also did a thorough check of all cooling components and topped up the coolant. Much better experience than my previous repair attempts. Sometimes paying more for quality work saves money in the long run. The car runs great now and I feel safer knowing the cooling system is properly fixed.
