VW Sharan Diesel: Rough Running + Check Engine Light Fix

My VW Sharan diesel 2010 (128000km) is giving me headaches lately. The check engine light keeps coming on and the engine feels weak and runs rough. The diagnostic scan shows an error code and I suspect the air temperature sensor might be failing. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Getting mixed feedback from mechanics and would appreciate hearing about your experiences before taking it to another shop.

Had the same issue on my VW Touran 2.0 TDI from 2013. The IAT sensor failure caused similar symptoms, rough running and reduced power output. The diagnostic tool confirmed the temperature reading was inconsistent, fluctuating between extreme values. The air sensor replacement turned out to be a straightforward fix. The intake air temperature sensor connects to the engine management system and when faulty, it sends incorrect readings, causing the ECU to adjust fuel mixture inappropriately. This explains the poor performance you are experiencing. The car sensor replacement took about an hour at the garage. The technician also cleaned the surrounding intake manifold area since debris can affect readings. After replacement, the check engine light cleared and engine performance returned to normal. This is not typically a serious issue, but driving with a malfunctioning IAT sensor long-term can affect fuel efficiency and potentially cause additional engine management problems. The diagnostic code you are getting is likely similar to what my car displayed, worth addressing soon to prevent any cascade effects. The repair was permanent, no recurring issues with the temperature readings or engine performance since the replacement.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Dealing with a similar situation on my VW Sharan right now. The symptoms match exactly what you described with the inconsistent temperature reading and rough running. Planning to get it fixed this week based on your feedback. Did you remember roughly what you paid for the air temperature sensor replacement? Also curious if any other related issues came up since the repair? Always good to know what to watch out for with these sensor problems.

Glad to help with an update. Just had the faulty intake air temperature sensor replaced last month and the fix cost 155€ total. Since the repair, the engine has been running smoothly with no warning lights or performance problems. The mechanic confirmed what I suspected, the IAT sensor was sending incorrect readings to the engine management system. The diagnostic tool showed the same error code you mentioned. After replacing the air sensor, they did a complete system check to ensure no other engine issues were lurking. No related problems have appeared since the fix. Engine power is back to normal and fuel consumption has actually improved slightly. The air temperature readings are now stable and consistent, which is exactly what you want to see. The repair shop mentioned these sensor failures are fairly common on our engine type, but once properly fixed, they rarely cause trouble again. Just make sure the new sensor is properly calibrated after installation to avoid any recurring engine issues.

Finally got my Sharan fixed today. Took it to a local shop that specializes in VW diagnostics. The mechanic immediately spotted the failing air temperature sensor when running the scan. The whole repair took about 45 minutes and cost 180€ including parts and labor. The car sensor replacement made an instant difference. Engine power returned to normal and the rough running completely disappeared. The intake air readings are now stable according to their final diagnostic check. Really glad I addressed this before it could cause other problems. The car runs like new again, no check engine light, no power loss, and the engine response is much smoother. The mechanic also cleaned the surrounding area, which apparently helps prevent future temperature reading issues. Best 180€ spent recently, considering how much smoother the car runs now. Should have done this weeks ago instead of worrying about mixed feedback from other shops. Makes sense why you were so confident about the fix in your earlier replies.
