VW Scirocco Power Steering Column Failure Fix Costs

Looking for advice with my 2010 VW Scirocco (148000km). The electronic steering column stopped adjusting and throws an error code. Had some previous issues with a mechanic and worried about getting ripped off again. Anyone dealt with electric steering adjustment problems on these models? What was the fix and repair cost in your case?

Had this exact steering column adjustment issue on my 2013 VW Golf GTI. The electric steering adjustment failed completely, throwing the same error code commonly seen in VW models from this era. The root cause in my case was a faulty connection in the steering column wiring harness. The repair involved accessing the steering column assembly and replacing the damaged wiring harness along with the electric adjustment motor. This is actually a serious electrical system problem that needs proper diagnosis. A complete steering column teardown was required to access and repair the components. The job took about 4 hours in total. Two things typically cause this: Either the electric adjustment motor fails, or the wiring harness develops issues from repeated movement. In VW models, the wiring harness is more commonly the culprit. Important: Make sure the shop does a full diagnostic scan before starting repairs. Some technicians might suggest replacing the entire steering column assembly when only the wiring needs repair. The steering column adjustment system is a comfort feature but also a safety component. Getting it fixed properly is important, even if it means spending more at a qualified shop.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Your Golf GTI scenario sounds very similar to my Scirocco mechanical fault. Mind sharing how much the repair ended up costing? My electronic steering issue started last week and I worry about the price. Also wondering if youve had any other steering-related problems since getting it fixed? The column adjustment problems on my Scirocco are exactly as you described, complete failure with error codes. Really helpful to know about the wiring harness being a common issue rather than the motor. Will make sure to mention this when talking to mechanics.

Following up on my earlier post about the Golf GTI steering issue, got good news to share. The electric steering column adjustment is working perfectly now after getting it fixed last month. Turned out to be much simpler than expected. The mechanic found a loose cable connection in the steering column wiring, which was causing the adjustment failure. Total repair cost came to 95€, mostly labor for accessing and fixing the connection. Much better than replacing the entire steering column assembly. Since fixing that steering issue, everything has been smooth sailing. No more error codes or adjustment problems. Its worth mentioning that these electric adjustment problems are pretty common in VAG cars from that era, often due to simple wiring issues rather than complete system failure. Quick tip: make sure your mechanic checks the wiring connections first before suggesting more expensive repairs. The steering column diagnostics should reveal if its just a connection problem rather than a full component failure.

Finally got my Scirocco fixed yesterday. Took your advice about mentioning the wiring harness issue to the mechanic. Really glad I did because they found the exact same problem, just a faulty connection in the electronic steering system. Total bill came to 120€ for diagnostic and repair work. Much better than the 800€ quote I got from another shop that wanted to replace the entire steering column assembly. The repair took about 3 hours and included a full system check to make sure no other steering components were affected. The car steering feels perfect now and all error codes are gone. The column adjustment works smoothly again. Really appreciate the heads up about getting the wiring checked first, saved me from an unnecessary expensive repair. Makes me feel better knowing these electric steering issues are common and usually fixable without major parts replacement. Will definitely keep an eye on the steering system maintenance going forward.
