VW Polo Transmission Issues: Common Sensor Fix Revealed

Looking for advice on my 2015 VW Polo diesel with transmission issues. The car has gone into emergency mode and shows both engine and transmission warning lights. When shifting gears, there are grinding noises and the shifts feel rough and inconsistent. I suspect a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor might be causing these problems. Has anyone faced similar symptoms and had them fixed? I would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences, especially regarding the diagnosis process and what parts needed replacement. What should I expect when taking it to a workshop for this transmission repair?

I had a similar transmission issue with my 2013 VW Golf diesel that sounds exactly like what you are describing. I have some experience working on cars but automatic transmission work is definitely workshop territory. The symptoms matched perfectly, emergency mode, warning lights, and those concerning grinding noises during gear shifts. The automatic transmission was behaving erratically, and I was worried it might be a major failure. Took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed the problem using their diagnostic equipment. Turned out the transmission oil level was too low, which triggered the transmission oil sensor warnings. The gearbox sensor system detected the insufficient oil level and activated limp mode as a protection measure. The total repair cost was 365€ which included: Fresh transmission oil, Oil level check and adjustment, Complete diagnostic scan, Sensor check and reset What is your current mileage and when was the last time you had the transmission oil changed? Also, have you noticed any oil spots where you park? These details would help determine if you might be dealing with the same issue. Before spending money on repairs, the workshop should definitely check the transmission oil level and inspect for any potential leaks in the system. A proper diagnosis with professional equipment will reveal if any temperature sensors or other gearbox sensors need replacement.

Thanks for sharing that experience. My VW was last serviced 8 months ago at 51000km and currently shows 56763km. The transmission issues you described match my symptoms exactly. The service history shows no record of transmission oil changes, so your suggestion about checking the oil level makes a lot of sense. I have not noticed any oil spots where I park. Based on your repair costs, it seems like a reasonable starting point to have the transmission oil level checked first before exploring more complex automatic transmission repairs. Will schedule a diagnostic scan to confirm if its just low oil causing the gear shifting problems or if there are other sensor-related issues.

Thanks for the update on your VW. Since we are dealing with similar transmission issues, I can share more specific details from my repair experience. The fact you have not seen any oil spots is actually good news. In my case, the transmission oil level had gradually decreased over time without any visible leaks, which is somewhat common in these models. One thing I learned during my repair is that transmission oil temperature sensors can sometimes give false readings when the oil level drops too low. This explains why both of us experienced the warning lights and emergency mode activation, the gearbox sensor system gets confused by incorrect temperature readings. When they diagnosed my car, they found the original transmission oil had degraded significantly, contributing to the rough shifting. A fresh oil change made a remarkable difference in shifting quality and resolved the overheating problems. Given your mileage and service history, definitely push for a complete transmission oil service. Your symptoms align perfectly with what I experienced, the grinding during gear changes and erratic shifting are classic signs of transmission issues related to oil level or quality. The diagnostic scan will give a clear picture, but based on the matching symptoms and similar vehicle age, you are likely looking at a straightforward fix rather than major transmission problems.

Thanks for that detailed information. You have really helped me understand what I am dealing with. The similarities between our cases are quite striking. At 56763km with no record of transmission oil changes, I will definitely focus on getting the oil level and condition checked first. The lack of oil spots under my car does give me some hope that this might be a maintenance issue rather than a serious leak. I have booked the car in for next week. I made sure to mention the transmission oil temperature sensor warnings and gear shifting problems, so they can do a proper diagnostic scan. Really hoping it turns out to be just low or degraded transmission oil like in your case. The 365€ repair cost you mentioned seems reasonable if it fixes these transmission issues. Will update the forum once I get the diagnosis results and know exactly what caused the automatic transmission to go into emergency mode. These experiences are valuable for other VW owners who might face similar gearbox sensor problems in the future.
