Just had my latest service at 127425km. The workshop did a diagnostic scan that revealed low hydraulic fluid pressure in the automatic transmission system. They suggested a complete transmission fluid change since no maintenance records existed for it. My slipping transmission symptoms match what you described, the emergency mode and erratic shifting behavior. The car transmission definitely needs attention soon. Will book an appointment to have the electrical system and transmission performance checked thoroughly based on your experience. Thanks for detailing the repair steps and costs. The systematic diagnostic approach you outlined makes sense before jumping to major repairs.

Thanks for the update on your Phaeton's transmission situation. Your hydraulic fluid pressure reading confirms my initial suspicion. When I had my transmission issues fixed, the workshop also found similar pressure problems, which were directly linked to degraded transmission fluid. The automatic transmission in these VWs is quite sensitive to fluid condition. My transmission performance improved dramatically after the fluid change, but here's what I learned from my experience, make sure they: 1. Use the correct specification hydraulic fluid 2. Check the transmission filter during the service 3. Perform a proper adaptation procedure after the fluid change 4. Clear any stored fault codes The fluid change resolved both the emergency mode and erratic shifting in my case. However, if you still experience automatic gearbox issues after the service, get them to check the solenoids, these can get sticky with old fluid and might need cleaning or replacement. Total repair time was about 4 hours, and the transmission problems never returned. Keep us updated on how the service goes, would be interesting to see if your fix matches my experience.

Thanks for the detailed advice on the transmission service steps. Had the work done yesterday and wanted to share the outcome. The automatic transmission now shifts smoothly after they completed all the steps you suggested. The workshop confirmed degraded transmission fluid was causing the problems. They performed a complete transmission flush, replaced the filter, and did the adaptation procedure you mentioned. Also had them check the solenoids which thankfully were still in good condition. Total cost came to 320€ which seems reasonable given the extensive service. The transmission performance is back to normal, no more emergency mode or erratic shifting. Really glad I addressed this before any major transmission problems developed. The car transmission feels like new again. Shifting is crisp and predictable. Will definitely keep up with regular maintenance from now on to avoid similar issues. Thanks again for helping me solve this problem properly.

I had a similar transmission issue with my 2009 VW Passat last year. As someone with moderate experience working on VWs, I can tell you that erratic shifting in these transmissions often relates to electrical problems rather than just transmission oil issues. My automatic transmission showed similar symptoms, unpredictable shifting and emergency mode activation. After diagnostic testing, the workshop found an undervoltage problem affecting the transmission control unit. While a transmission flush might help in some cases, electrical issues need addressing first. The repair involved: Full system diagnostic scan, Checking the battery and charging system, Resetting transmission control unit, Fresh transmission oil replacement as preventive maintenance Total cost was 240€ and resolved the problem completely. The transmission has worked flawlessly since then. Could you share: Current mileage on your Phaeton? When was the last transmission oil change? Are you experiencing any other electrical issues (dim lights, slow starter)? Have you checked the battery voltage? This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced and could guide you toward the right solution.
