VW Passat station wagon problems with the EGR valve

Hey guys, I have a strange problem with my 2015 VW Passat, diesel. The engine light comes on, the engine stalls on its own, loses power and runs rough. There is also a strong exhaust smell and shuddering at idle. I suspect that it could be the EGR valve. Have you had similar experiences with these symptoms and could you share how your garage fixed it? I am grateful for any tips!

Hello, I know your problem only too well. I had the same thing with my 2013 VW Golf Variant, diesel. I'm not a mechanic, but I do know a bit about cars. After a visit to the garage, my suspicions were confirmed - it was the EGR valve. The mechanics replaced it and my car ran perfectly again. It cost me 355 euros but it was worth it. Can you please give more details about your car? Mileage, last service, etc.? Then maybe I can help you a little more specifically. Say hello and good luck!

Thanks for the feedback, that helps! My Passat has just under 127852 km on it and I had the last service done about 3 months ago. Apart from this problem, it actually runs quite well. It's strange that these EGR valves so often cause problems when you read about them on the internet. I think I'll have to take it to the garage to have this confirmed. I hope it stays at the 355 euros you quoted!

Hello again! Your car has already done a lot of kilometers, so a problem with the EGR valve is not unusual. This was also the case with my Golf at a similar mileage. It's really annoying that EGR valves are so prone to failure, but at the end of the day it's a wear part like any other. I would recommend going to the same mechanic who did your last service if you trust him. That way he may be able to make a connection between your current problem and possible work that was done at the last service. The cost of an EGR valve repair can vary, but I think you should be looking at around 300 to 400 euros. Hopefully it's nothing more serious and you'll be back on the road quickly. Keep us posted and good luck!

Thanks again for your tips and good wishes! Yes, it's already done a few kilometers, but basically it's always been reliable. I didn't know that the EGR valve is a wearing part - another lesson learned! I actually have a good relationship with my mechanic and will give him a try. Hopefully the price will be in the range you mentioned. I'll definitely let you know when I know more. Thanks again and see you soon!

For your 2014 VW GTI 2.0T, the "EGR system exhaust gas flow too high" code can still apply even though it's a gasoline engine. This could be due to a stuck EGR valve or a clogged EGR passage. Start by checking the EGR valve for any signs of sticking or blockage. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, it's best to have a mechanic inspect it, as a malfunctioning EGR system can affect engine performance. Let us know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
