VW Nivus Engine Runs Hot and Cold: Thermostat Alert

My VW Nivus (2020, gasoline, 68k km) has been acting strange lately. The engine temperature seems off, sometimes running too hot, other times taking forever to warm up. Pretty sure the thermostat is the culprit but want to avoid another bad mechanic experience. Had anyone dealt with similar temperature control issues and can recommend what to look out for during repairs? The coolant system was checked last time but still having problems.

The temperature sensor now shows consistent readings and the engine warms up normally. No more erratic cooling fan behavior either. The coolant system is working perfectly, maintaining proper temperature in all driving conditions. It has been several months since the repair with no recurring issues. Getting the thermostat housing replaced was definitely the right call. With these TSI engines, a properly functioning temperature control system is crucial for preventing long-term engine damage. Would definitely recommend getting that pressure test done to confirm your diagnosis. The symptoms you describe are textbook thermostat failure indicators. Thanks for the advice. Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to share how it went. The pressure test confirmed a small leak in the thermostat housing. Total repair cost was 380€ which included a new thermostat assembly and fresh coolant. The water pump looked fine during inspection, but they found the old thermostat was definitely causing the engine overheating issues. The repair took about 4 hours, and they did a thorough check of the entire cooling system while everything was apart. Been driving for a few days now and the temperature gauge stays rock steady. The engine warms up normally and the cooling fan cycles properly. No more weird temperature swings or overheating concerns. Really glad I got this fixed before it caused any serious engine damage. The mechanic was great, showed me the old parts and explained everything clearly. Money well spent to get the cooling system working properly again.
