VW Golf TDI jerks and idles rough, fuel system alert

I need advice on my 2004 VW Golf TDI (118560km). My check engine light is on and the car jerks noticeably during acceleration. The engine has a rough idle and feels uneven when running. Had some issues with mechanics before and want to make sure I know what I am dealing with before taking it in. Could this be related to a faulty oxygen sensor or fuel injection problem? Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their Golf? Would appreciate hearing about repair costs and trusted solutions.

Had similar issues with my 2007 VW Jetta TDI at 125000km. The symptoms match exactly what I experienced, jerking during acceleration and rough idle. Initially suspected a faulty oxygen sensor, but diagnostic testing revealed a failing crankshaft sensor combined with a clogged fuel injector. The engine misfire was most noticeable during cold starts and when accelerating from low speeds. The repair involved replacing both the crankshaft sensor and cleaning the fuel injection system. Since the timing belt was due for replacement anyway, had that done during the same service to prevent future issues. The exhaust leak discovered during inspection was quite serious, it was causing incorrect readings in the engine management system. Left untreated, this would have led to increased fuel consumption and potential engine damage. For your Golf TDI, these symptoms strongly suggest either a sensor issue or fuel delivery problem. The mileage is in the range where these components typically start showing wear. Would recommend getting a proper diagnostic scan to pinpoint the exact cause rather than replacing parts based on guesswork. Based on the symptoms, this requires immediate attention as it affects both engine performance and potentially long-term reliability.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Jetta. The symptoms sound identical to what I faced with my Golf last winter, check engine light, jerky acceleration, and rough idle. My mechanic also found a failing crankshaft sensor plus some worn spark plugs that needed replacing. They ended up doing a full ignition system check, including testing the ignition coils. Just wondering how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? My repair was several months ago but I like to hear about long-term outcomes from similar cases.

The repair work solved all the issues with my Jetta, no more rough idle or uneven engine running since getting it fixed. After finding the exhaust leak during inspection, they repaired it for 265€, which turned out to be a crucial fix for the engine management system readings. Like your Golf, my crankshaft sensor was causing problems with engine performance. The fuel pump and injection system also needed attention to get everything running properly again. Regular maintenance since then has kept everything working smoothly, no check engine lights or performance issues for over a year now. Sounds like your mechanic took the right approach by doing a complete ignition system check. These TDI engines really need thorough diagnostics to pinpoint the exact problems rather than just replacing parts out of nowhere. The timing belt maintenance schedule is also critical to follow for preventing future issues.

Thanks again for the information. I took my Golf to a reputable mechanic who specializes in VW diesels. The total repair came to 850€, including parts and labor. They replaced the crankshaft sensor, cleaned the fuel injectors, and installed new spark plugs since the old ones were pretty worn. The air filter was also quite dirty so they changed that while they were at it. The whole process took about 6 hours but the difference in how the car runs now is incredible. No more engine misfire, jerking, or rough idle issues. The check engine light has stayed off and the car runs smoothly even during cold starts. Its been about 3 months since the repairs and everything is still working perfectly. The mechanic explained all the work clearly and even showed me the old parts they replaced. Really glad I got it fixed properly instead of trying cheaper temporary solutions.
