And indeed, older vehicles or those with high mileage, like yours, are more likely to have problems with the EGR valve. It's just part of the engine, and it's already covered a lot of ground in your case. The last service certainly also plays a role. To avoid this in the future, I would definitely recommend regular servicing, even if it costs money. This often saves costs in the long term because you can detect problems earlier and, if necessary, fix them before they become bigger (and more expensive).
