Hey, thanks for your quick reply! Sounds exactly like my Golf. It already has quite a few kilometers on it, namely 176543 km, and it's been a while since the last service. Do you think this could be a reason why the EGR valve is now causing problems? Any tips on how I can prevent this next time? Otherwise, the old box is actually still running quite well. I'll probably have to take it to the garage and have it replaced. 355 euros is pretty steep, I hope I can get away with it a bit cheaper!

Moin Moin, yes, that could well be the case. I had the same symptoms as your Golf. And indeed, older vehicles or those with high mileage, like yours, are more likely to have problems with the EGR valve. It's just part of the engine, and it's already covered a lot of ground in your case. The last service certainly also plays a role. To avoid this in the future, I would definitely recommend regular servicing, even if it costs money. This often saves costs in the long term because you can detect problems earlier and, if necessary, fix them before they become bigger (and more expensive). So I would say go to the garage and have it checked. In my case, the 355 euros included labor, so maybe you can get away with it a bit cheaper - it really depends on the individual case. And who knows, maybe it's something else after all. Good luck and hope your Golf is back in shape soon! Keep us posted, will you?

Hey, that's really good advice! I can see that regular inspections make sense. It's probably time for me to get my Golf in better shape and have it checked more regularly. Your comparison really helped me, so thanks again for that! I didn't think it was such a common problem with VW cars. I'll make the appointment at the garage as soon as possible and hope that the costs don't go through the roof. I'll keep you posted as soon as I know more. Have a good day and drive carefully!

Hello, I recently had a similar problem with my 2007 VW Passat. I'm not an automotive professional, but I would classify my knowledge as somewhere between "a little" and "not so much". I took my car to the garage and the guys there checked my EGR valve and found that it was defective. They replaced it and I paid 355 euros for it. Since then, the car has been running like a champ again. Maybe you could give me a few more details about your car, then I could perhaps say more precisely whether it's the same problem.
