Unsteady engine

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2014 VW Golf gasoline engine. It has a lot of black smoke when accelerating, the engine light comes on, has hardly any engine power and runs rough. It also jerks when accelerating, sometimes won't start, consumes a lot of fuel, just dies when idling and it shakes when stationary. I assume this is due to a defective ignition coil or recognized misfiring. Have you had similar experiences and can you help me? How did your workshop solve the problem? Really grateful for any tips!

Hi buddy, I once had a similar problem with my 2012 VW Polo. I don't really have much car knowledge, but I do have some experience with various problems. In my case, however, the engine control unit was defective. The garage I visited removed the old unit and fitted a new one. This cost me around 1000 euros. Can you give me more information about your vehicle? Then I might be able to give you more specific tips.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! My Golf has already done 218765 km. I last had it serviced and everything was still in order. A new control unit sounds really expensive... I'm still hoping that it's "just" the ignition coils. Have you ever heard of something like that? They should actually last the whole life of the car, shouldn't they?

Hello again! Ignition coils do indeed normally last the life of the car. However, they can certainly have their faults, especially with high mileage. If I were you, I would definitely have them checked at the garage. The ignition coils on my old Polo were defective once and this caused similar symptoms to your Golf. It's definitely cheaper than replacing a control unit. So, cheer up, hope for the best and take it to the garage!

Hey, thanks for the reassurance! I have a feeling it's not such a bad idea to have the ignition coils checked at the garage. I'll make sure I get it checked as soon as possible. You've really helped me out, thank you! Hopefully it's nothing worse and I have to spend all my money on fixing it. Have a great evening!

Hello, I have a VW Golf 7 GTI with 201,700 km that's experiencing misfiring issues. What could be causing this problem, and what steps should I take to diagnose and fix it? Any advice on common issues at this mileage would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Misfiring can be caused by several issues such as faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Start by checking the condition of your spark plugs and if they're worn out, replace them. If the problem persists, it could be the ignition coils or fuel injectors. It's also worth checking for any error codes with an OBD2 scanner. If you're not comfortable doing these checks yourself, I'd recommend taking your car to a professional mechanic.
