VW Fox Washer Pump and Headlight Cleaner Failure Fix

Having issues with my 2007 VW Fox diesel where the windshield washer stopped working completely. The washer pump makes no sound when activated, and I suspect it might be connected to the headlight cleaning system malfunction indicator that recently came up. Would like to hear from others who dealt with a similar fault, what was the root cause in your case and what repairs were needed? Already checked fuses and washer fluid level, both are fine. Most interested in workshop repair experiences and actual fix costs.

Had almost the exact same issue with my 2009 VW Polo diesel. Having some experience working with electrical systems in cars, I first suspected a pump malfunction, but it turned out more complex. The workshop found a faulty cable connection between the washer pump and relay. The headlight cleaning system malfunction was actually the first indicator something was wrong with the electrical circuit. There was a clog in one system which caused additional strain, leading to the connection fault. The fix involved: Testing electrical connections, Replacing damaged wiring, Clearing the clog in washer hose, Rechecking headlight washer system Total repair cost was 165€ including parts and labor. Everything works perfectly since then. To help diagnose your case more precisely, could you share: Any unusual sounds before complete failure? Does the malfunction light appear constantly or intermittently? When was the last time the headlight cleaning system worked properly? Have you noticed any washer fluid leaks? These details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with my Polo.

Last service done at 42000km and symptoms appeared shortly after. Looking at your reply, my case seems identical. The headlight washer malfunction light started flickering before becoming constant. No unusual sounds before failure, but I did notice small drops of washer fluid near the front bumper about 2 weeks before the system stopped working completely. The xenon headlight cleaning system last worked during the winter, and I remember it seeming a bit weak even then. Just checked again, found some residue around the washer nozzles which might indicate a clog in the system. Your repair details really help narrow down where to look. Will have the workshop check the electrical connections and hoses next week.

Thanks for those extra details, they really confirm my suspicions about your Fox having the same issue as my Polo. The fluid drops near the bumper combined with the malfunction light behavior match exactly what happened in my case. The residue around the xenon headlight washer nozzles is particularly telling. In my case, that buildup was partially causing the system malfunction by creating excess pressure in the hose network. This extra strain was what ultimately damaged the electrical connections. After my repair, the workshop advised regular system maintenance to prevent future issues: Cleaning nozzles every 3 months, Running the washer system at least monthly in dry periods, Having hoses checked during annual service The flickering malfunction indicator before total failure is almost certainly pointing to the same electrical connection problem I had. Based on your service timing, it makes sense, these faults often develop around that mileage point. Would recommend having them test the complete washer system circuit, not just the windshield components. The workshop should focus on the connection points where the wiring meets the pump assembly.

Thanks for the detailed workshop experience. After hearing how the LED malfunction indicator behavior matches my situation, I feel more confident about the repair direction. The cleaning system definitely needs attention, especially with that clog evidence I found near the nozzles. Will get it checked next week focusing on: Electrical connections to the pump, Complete system pressure test, Cleaning all washer nozzles, Checking for remaining fluid leaks The repair cost you mentioned (165€) helps set realistic expectations. Nice knowing the root cause was found and fixed in your case without needing major parts replacement. Will schedule those suggested maintenance checks going forward to prevent future issues. Good tip about running the system regularly, never thought about that causing problems during dry spells. Really appreciate the thorough feedback, helps avoid paying for unnecessary repairs by targeting the actual problem areas.
