Exhaust leak

Hi everyone, my 2012 VW Eos diesel is causing me concern. I see black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on, the engine is losing power, there is an exhaust leak and the exhaust smell is very strong. Could this be due to the exhaust aftertreatment? Has anyone had similar experiences and how was the problem solved in the workshop? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2014 VW Passat (so I have some experience with it). In my case, it was also the lambda sensor that was faulty. The black smoke and the other symptoms match. I took the car to the garage and they replaced the defective lambda sensor. That cost me 375.0 euros. Could you please provide more information about your vehicle, such as mileage and whether the diesel particulate filter has been cleaned recently? Then I can help you more precisely. Best regards!

Hey, thanks for your reply! My Eos currently has 107654 km on the clock and the last major inspection was about 6 months ago. The diesel particulate filter was not explicitly mentioned during this inspection, so I don't know if it was cleaned. Could it also be related to this? Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the info! At 107654 km, it could well be the diesel particulate filter (DPF) that is causing problems. If the DPF is clogged, this often leads to symptoms such as black smoke, loss of power and a strong exhaust odor. An exhaust leak could also have its origin in the clogged DPF because the pressure in the exhaust system increases. If the filter has really never or rarely been cleaned, this would be one of the first points I would address in a workshop. You can have the DPF cleaned or, if it is too clogged, possibly replace it. In addition to the lambda sensor and the DPF, there are other components such as the EGR valve and turbocharger that can cause similar symptoms. The fault memory of your Eos should be able to provide further information here. It is best to have a thorough diagnosis carried out in the workshop to determine the exact cause. Perhaps cleaning or replacing the DPF will solve the problem. But in any case: Have the error read out first! Hope this helps you! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the detailed information! I'll probably start by having the fault memory read out and contacting the garage about the DPF. Hopefully it really is just a cleaning or a replacement, that would still be manageable. I'll have the EGR valve and turbocharger checked at the same time. Thanks again for the tips, that will definitely help me! Best regards!
