VW Caddy Heavy Steering Points to Failed Power Pump

My Caddy steering has gotten really heavy lately and the wheel shakes when driving. The power steering barely works and I have to use much more force to turn. There is also an error code stored. Had some bad experiences with mechanics before, so I want to know if anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Could it be the steering pump or pressure hose? Car is a 2006 VW Caddy 1.6L gas engine with 137992km. Thanks for any advice on diagnosis and repair costs.

Had the same symptoms on a 2009 VW Golf 1.4 TSI. The electric steering system was heavily affected by a faulty connection at the steering column. When the steering got stiff and began shaking, the error code pointed to the power steering control module. The root cause was corrosion in the wiring harness connector that links the steering system to the control module. This created intermittent connection issues, making the power assist cut in and out. The steering pump and pressure hose were actually fine after testing. This is a serious safety concern that needs immediate attention, as complete power steering failure can occur suddenly. The repair involved cleaning the corroded terminals and replacing the damaged connector pins in the steering column wiring. The system needed recalibration after the fix. Would strongly recommend having a proper diagnostic scan done rather than continuing to drive with these symptoms. While my issue was electrical, your symptoms could also indicate mechanical problems with the steering components that require inspection.

Thanks for the detailed write-up. This sounds exactly like what I experienced with my Caddy last month. The steering wheel became really heavy and started shaking, making it unsafe to drive. The mechanic found that my power steering pump was failing and the hydraulic fluid was leaking from a cracked pressure hose. The steering rack itself was still in good condition fortunately. They replaced both the pump and hose, plus did a full system flush with new fluid. The steering is now smooth as new. Did you get yours fixed already? Wondering what the total repair cost was in your case and if you had any other issues pop up since the repair? My bill came close to 600€ for parts and labor, but it was worth it for the peace of mind.

Just had my Golf back from the mechanic who sorted the power steering issue. In my case it turned out to be much simpler than your pump and hydraulic fluid problems. The fault was traced to a damaged cable connection at the steering column, which was causing the intermittent power steering failures. The total repair cost was only 95€ since no major components needed replacement. The mechanic cleaned and repaired the connector pins, then reset the steering system. The power steering now works perfectly with no more shaking or heavy steering issues. This highlights why proper diagnosis is crucial, similar symptoms can have very different causes and repair costs. Your steering pump and pressure hose replacement was definitely the right fix for your situation, even though it cost more. At least the steering rack was still good, as that would have added significantly to the bill. Been driving for several months now with no recurring issues. The steering feels responsive and smooth, just like when the car was new.

Thanks for the advice. Finally got my Caddy sorted last month and wanted to share what happened. Took it to a mechanic who specializes in steering systems. The diagnosis showed my power steering pump was shot and there was a crack in the pressure hose causing fluid leaks. Got both parts replaced and had them do a complete system flush with new fluid. The wheel alignment was also slightly off, so they adjusted that too. Total bill came to 600€ which seemed fair considering the work done. The steering is now butter smooth with no more shaking or stiffness. Really glad I got it fixed before the problems got worse. Makes such a difference in how the car handles now. Definitely learned my lesson about not putting off steering issues when they first appear.
