VW Caddy Engine Misfire & Rough Idle Issue Solved

Had mine in for service last week at 94918km. Based on your symptoms and my recent repair, I would check the ignition coils first. My engine had similar issues, rough idle and misfires. The mechanic found two failing ignition coils causing unusual misfires. They also tested the fuel injectors and oxygen sensor while diagnosing the problem. The repair cost was 380€ including parts and labor. The car runs smooth now with no check engine light. Ignition coils often fail around this mileage, especially if they are original parts. Just make sure they check all coils since they tend to wear out around the same time. Would recommend getting it looked at soon before it potentially causes damage to other components like the catalytic converter.

Thanks for the feedback on your repair experience. My Golf had very similar symptoms and I also ended up having ignition coil problems around the 95000km mark. After replacing the faulty coils, I went ahead and changed all four since they were original parts and likely to fail soon anyway. The timing belt was due for replacement as well, so I had that done at the same time. Just like your case, the engine misfire symptoms completely disappeared after fixing the coils. The rough idle and jerking during acceleration were solved, and the check engine light hasn't come back on since. Total cost was a bit higher at 520€ since I opted to replace all coils preventively plus the timing belt service. But considering the potential damage a failing coil can cause to the catalytic converter and other engine components, it was worth the investment. The fuel pump and crankshaft sensor were tested during diagnosis but were working fine. Really glad I didn't wait too long to fix it, the mechanic mentioned that prolonged misfires can lead to much more expensive repairs down the line.

Thanks for sharing your detailed experience. Mine is a 2.0L TSI and yes, the rough idle does improve somewhat when warm. No unusual exhaust sounds but fuel consumption has increased slightly. After reading about your repair and checking common engine misfire causes, I suspect ignition coils might be the culprit in my case too. I will have the mechanic focus on testing the ignition coils first, while also checking the fuel injectors and oxygen sensor during diagnosis. My Caddy has 98000km on it with original coils, so the timing fits with what you described about typical failure points. Your exhaust manifold issue is also worth investigating since the symptoms match. Will mention that to the workshop when I bring it in next week. Better to catch these issues early before they cause more extensive engine damage. Really appreciate the detailed breakdown of your repair costs and diagnostic process, helps set realistic expectations for my upcoming repair.

Having dealt with very similar symptoms on my 2008 VW Golf with the 1.4 TSI engine, I can share some relevant experience from my repair journey. The rough idle and engine misfire in my case turned out to be caused by a leak in the exhaust manifold, which was affecting the engine sensors readings. The crankshaft sensor was getting incorrect data, leading to timing issues and the misfire codes you described. The symptoms were nearly identical: Rough idle, especially when cold, Engine misfire codes, Jerky acceleration, Check engine light staying on The total repair came to 265€ including parts and labor. The workshop found the leak during a pressure test of the exhaust system. They also checked the fuel pump and spark plugs as part of the diagnostic process, but these were functioning normally. To properly assist further, could you share: Which engine size is in your Caddy? Does the rough idle get better once the engine warms up? Are there any unusual exhaust sounds or smells? Have you noticed any changes in fuel consumption? These details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced.
