VW Caddy Door Lock Failure: Common Fix Revealed

Having issues with my 2000 VW Caddy where the keyless entry stopped working suddenly. The car door wiring fault is confirmed by error codes in the system memory. The electric door handle seems unresponsive, and I suspect there might be an issue with the door switch or locking system. Has anyone encountered similar problems with their Caddy? Really interested to know what the repair involved and how much it cost to fix. Ideally looking for workshop experience and repair tips before I take it in.

I had a similar issue with my 2002 VW Golf, the door electronics suddenly failed and the electric door handles stopped responding. Having some experience with car repairs, I first thought it was a sensor issue, but it turned out to be more complex. After scanning for error codes, my workshop found that the cable connection to the door control module was damaged. The wire insulation had worn through, causing intermittent failures in the locking system. The repair involved replacing the affected wiring harness and checking all door handle connections. The total repair cost was 95€, which covered both diagnostics and the wiring replacement. The workshop completed the job in about 2 hours, and the electric door system has worked flawlessly since then. Before offering more specific advice for your case, could you provide: Complete error codes from your scan, Whether this affects all doors or just one, If you notice any other electrical issues with your doors, Whether the central locking still works with the physical key This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with my Golf and whether the repair approach might be similar.

Thanks for sharing that experience. At last service (74970km), my mechanic mentioned the locking system was starting to show signs of wear but wasnt critical yet. My issue seems different though, as the wiring fault only affects the passenger side door mechanism. The error codes are indeed similar to what you described, but the door switch still responds occasionally when the temperature is warmer. The physical key works fine in all locks. Will try checking the wire insulation near the door hinges first before booking a workshop appointment. 95€ seems reasonable if thats all it takes to fix. Anyone else have experience with this specific door wiring issue on a Caddy?

Thanks for those extra details about your Caddy. Your symptoms actually sound quite different from what I experienced with my Golf. The temperature-dependent behavior of your door actuator strongly suggests a different underlying issue than just worn wiring. In my case, the door mechanism failed completely regardless of temperature. The fact that your passenger door switch works intermittently in warmer conditions points more toward a potential sensor issue or a failing door control module rather than simple wire damage. After dealing with my own repair, I learned these door handle electronics can be sensitive to moisture and temperature changes. The door mechanism might need a complete control module replacement rather than just rewiring. When my workshop did further testing on my Golf, they found similar temperature-dependent behavior just before the module failed completely. Based on repair costs today, you might be looking at 150-200€ for a control module replacement if needed, rather than the 95€ I paid for just rewiring. Still worth checking those wire connections first though, particularly around the door hinge area where movement causes the most wear. Would recommend getting those exact error codes documented before heading to the workshop, it will help them pinpoint whether its truly a wiring issue or a failing control module like mine eventually turned out to be.

Thanks for the input. After looking more closely at the door mechanism yesterday, I can now confirm the issue is definitely concentrated in the passenger side control module. The error codes are consistent with module failure rather than just wire damage, and Ive noticed the door switch behavior gets worse during cold mornings. Given the feedback here about temperature-related sensor issues, Im going to skip checking the wiring and take it straight to the workshop for a control module replacement. The 150-200€ estimate sounds much more realistic than hoping for a simple 95€ wire fix, especially considering the age of the vehicle and the symptoms described. Will update the thread once I get it repaired in case anyone else runs into similar electric door problems with their Caddy. Really appreciate all the detailed information shared here about door control modules and their sensitivity to temperature changes.
