VW Belt Tensioner Issue Causes Squealing & Slipping

My serpentine belt is not running smoothly on my 2010 Touran with gasoline engine. When looking at the belt drive system, I noticed the belt tensioner seems to behave strangely, it does not maintain proper tension and the belt appears to skip occasionally. The belt squeal is particularly noticeable during cold starts. Has anyone experienced similar issues with the belt tensioner pulley? Looking for feedback on repair solutions and workshop experiences, particularly regarding tensioner replacement costs and if any additional parts were required during the fix.

I had a similar issue on my 2012 VW Golf with the 1.4 TSI engine. Having some experience with basic maintenance, I initially thought it was just the belt, but the symptoms you describe match exactly what I encountered. The belt squeal during cold starts was the first warning sign. The failing belt tensioner caused inconsistent tension, which led to the belt slipping. If left unfixed, this can affect engine performance and potentially damage other components driven by the belt. My workshop diagnosed a defective belt tensioner and also recommended replacing the idler pulley as a preventive measure. The entire repair, including parts and labor, cost me 455€. The fix completely eliminated the belt squeal and restored proper tension. To provide more specific advice for your situation, could you share: Which engine variant is in your Touran? How many kilometers has the car done? Have you noticed any other symptoms besides the squealing? When was the last belt or tensioner replacement? These details would help determine if your issue is identical to what I experienced and whether you might need additional components replaced along with the tensioner.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My Touran just had its service last month, and with 142763km on the clock, I didn't expect belt drive issues so soon. The engine noise and belt squeal have gotten worse since my initial post. The sound now varies with engine speed, particularly when accelerating. No other unusual symptoms besides the squealing, but automobile maintenance history shows the belt tensioner was never replaced since factory installation. Your repair cost reference is helpful. Since my symptoms match yours, I will schedule a workshop visit to have both the tensioner and idler pulley checked. Better to address it now than risk further engine performance issues. Did your repair also include a new serpentine belt, or just the tensioner and pulley?

Yes, my repair included a new serpentine belt along with the tensioner and idler pulley. With symptoms matching yours and similar mileage on my Golf, replacing all three components was recommended to ensure optimal belt drive performance. The varying noise with engine speed you mentioned exactly mirrors my experience. My mechanic explained that worn belt tensioners often show progressive deterioration, leading to increasingly inconsistent tension and belt squeal that changes with RPM. The timing was similar too, my issues started shortly after a routine service at around 140000km. The workshop explained that while the belt looked fine during service, tensioner wear isnt always visible during basic inspections. If the belt tensioner hasnt been replaced since factory installation, addressing all components now makes sense. The total cost included: Belt tensioner: 180€, Serpentine belt: 85€, Idler pulley: 75€, Labor: 115€ Post-repair, the belt drive system has been running smoothly with no squealing for the past 25000km. Getting the complete belt drive system renewed proved to be the right preventive decision.

I appreciate the detailed breakdown and confirmation about the serpentine belt being included. The cost information really helps with my planning. Since posting, the tensioner issue has definitely worsened, the belt squeal is now constant even during normal driving. Called the workshop today and booked an appointment for next week. They quoted similar prices to what you shared for the complete belt drive system overhaul. The service advisor agreed that replacing all components makes sense given the mileage and wear patterns. Going ahead with the full replacement of the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and serpentine belt. The total quoted cost is 470€, which seems reasonable based on your experience. Better to fix everything now than risk more serious issues down the line. Will update once the repair is done, but your similar experience has been really helpful in understanding what to expect. Hoping for the same positive outcome with no more belt squealing after the fix.
