Thanks for sharing your experience. The same control module issue happened to my 2018 Beetle last summer. The technician also replaced the clock spring and recalibrated everything. The steering controls have worked perfectly since then with no new electrical faults showing up. Can you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? Also wondering if any other sensor issues appeared after fixing the clock spring?

Thanks for asking about the repair costs. Since seeing the mechanic last month for the multifunction steering wheel problem, everything has worked flawlessly. The total bill came to 95€ for fixing the faulty cable connection in the steering wheel. The vehicle diagnostics showed no additional sensor issues after the repair. The control module and all steering column components are functioning perfectly now. The malfunction indicator cleared immediately after the cable was properly reconnected, and I have not seen any warning lights since. This seems to be a common repair for VW models from our generation, and while the initial fault can be concerning, the fix is typically straightforward when handled by a qualified technician. The steering wheel controls are now as responsive as they were when the car was new.

After getting different opinions, I took my Beetle to a certified VW workshop. The electrical fault was exactly what you described, a failed clock spring causing the multifunction steering controls to stop working. The repair took about 2 hours and cost 320€ total, including parts and labor. The control module started working immediately after they replaced the clock spring. The technician also checked all related sensor connections while the steering wheel was apart. No other issues were found and the warning lights cleared after they completed the system recalibration. Its been 3 weeks since the repair and all steering wheel functions are working perfectly. No new electrical faults or sensor issues have appeared. Really glad I got this fixed by specialists who knew exactly what they were dealing with.

Had a similar connectivity problem with my 2016 VW Golf GTI last month. The steering wheel controls stopped responding completely and the vehicle diagnostics showed an electrical fault in the steering column. The issue turned out to be more than a simple sensor malfunction. The clock spring inside the steering column had failed, causing a complete interruption of the electrical connections between the steering wheel controls and the main vehicle systems. This is actually a known issue across several VW models from this generation. The repair required disassembly of the steering wheel and replacement of the complete clock spring assembly. The malfunction indicator stayed on until the new component was installed and the system was recalibrated with proper diagnostic equipment. While not a safety-critical issue since it only affects the convenience controls, it does require attention from a qualified technician. The steering wheel needs to be properly aligned during reassembly, and the airbag system must be handled correctly. This is not a DIY-friendly repair due to the safety systems involved. The good news is that once properly fixed, the problem typically does not recur. Recommend having this addressed at a shop that specializes in VW electrical systems.
