Vw Beetle Cabrio problems with the EGR valve

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Strong exhaust smell

Shaking while idling

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey guys, I have a strange problem with my VW Beetle (diesel, year of manufacture 2016). The check engine light comes on, the engine shuts off on its own, has a loss of power and runs rough, stinks from the exhaust and shakes when idling. I suspect that the EGR valve is not working properly. Has anyone had similar experiences or any troubleshooting tips? How did you get this solved in the workshop? Would be super grateful for your help and advice!

Hi, had a similar problem with my VW Jetta (diesel, year 2014) - so an older model, but still almost the same. I would classify my automotive knowledge as pretty low, but I know enough to recognize problems when they occur. The symptoms sound very much like a faulty EGR valve. In my case, the EGR valve was also faulty and stuck, which caused quite a few problems. I took the car to the garage and had a pretty good mechanic at my side who recognized the problem relatively quickly. However, the repair wasn't cheap. The EGR valve was replaced and cost me 355 euros. But after the repair, the car ran smoothly again. Can you provide more information about your car? Does the car have a long mileage or other previous owners? More details could help us to narrow down the problem better.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My little darling already has 145678 km on the clock, but has always been carefully maintained. The last time it was serviced was recently. I'm starting to think you're right and the EGR valve could be the culprit. Seems like a visit to the garage is unavoidable. It's crazy how expensive such a small part can be! Thanks again for your advice!

Hey, no problem, that's what forums like this are for, right? If your Beetle really already has 145678 miles on it, and the majority of those miles were driven on the highway (where the EGR valve works at high speed), then it might actually be the culprit, like it was on my Jetta. Agree, it's crazy how expensive such a small part can be! But think about it this way - it's a lot cheaper to replace the EGR valve than to replace the whole engine. Worst case scenario, if left untreated, it can lead to even bigger and more expensive damage. I really recommend that you visit a workshop as soon as possible. You feel really relieved when the car is running normally again and the check engine light is off. Despite the costs involved, it's worth it! So, cheer up and get through it. I hope everything runs smoothly again after the repair. Tell us how it went and what they said at the workshop. I would be really interested!

Hello, yes, you're talking about something! Especially if you're dependent on the car, a repair like this can be a real pain - not only because of the cost, but also because of the uncertainty of what will happen afterwards. But you're absolutely right, it's better to have the EGR valve changed before even greater damage occurs. I probably have no choice but to go to the garage. Hopefully the mechanics there are just as fit as your mechanic! I'll definitely get back to you and let you know how it went. Thanks again for your tips and experience!
