VW Atlas Won't Start: Stuck Shifter & Trans Issues Alert

My 2021 VW Atlas wont start and has transmission issues. The gear shifter seems stuck and wont properly engage in park position. The check engine light is illuminated and the transmission shifts rough when driving. Already checked the park brake and neutral position settings without success. Any tips on what could be wrong with the gear linkage or transmission? Looking to hear from others who had similar symptoms and what repairs were needed to fix it. Want to have some insights before taking it to the shop, since transmission failure repairs can get expensive. Has anyone experienced this specific combination of issues?

Thanks for checking my previous symptoms. After reading the error codes at home, I got P0706 and P0705 which seem related to the transmission range sensor. The issue started quite suddenly last week after being parked outside during heavy rain. No transmission fluid leaks visible underneath. My current mileage is 59417km and last transmission service was done during the regular maintenance 6 months ago. The shift lock release also does not help to move out of park position. Getting really worried since I rely on the car for daily commuting and transmission repair costs can get quite high. Good to hear your control unit replacement fixed similar symptoms. Will have the transmission sensor checked first before replacing more expensive components. Hoping its just a loose connection or faulty sensor rather than internal transmission damage.

Based on those error codes and symptoms, especially happening after rain exposure, this really does sound similar to the transmission range sensor issue I dealt with on my Tiguan. The P0705/P0706 codes specifically indicate a transmission range sensor circuit problem, which matches your stuck gear shifter symptoms. The good news is that sensor repairs are much less expensive than full transmission repairs. In my case, water intrusion through a damaged sensor connector seal caused intermittent transmission sensor signals. The repair involved replacing the range sensor assembly and weather sealing the connector, costing around 300€ total. The shift lock mechanism not releasing is also consistent with a failed range sensor, since the transmission control unit cannot properly detect the current gear position. This creates a safety lockout situation where the gear shifter remains stuck. Given the sudden onset after rain and matching error codes, I recommend having the transmission sensor and wiring connections inspected first. Look specifically for: Corroded sensor connector pins, Damaged wire insulation, Water in the sensor housing, Loose mounting bolts This type of repair typically takes 2-3 hours of labor plus parts. Much better than a full transmission replacement if caught early before internal damage occurs.
