Volvo V90's Dimming Lights and Weak Battery at 200K Mileage: Potential Battery Sensor Issue

Weak battery when starting the engine

Dim or flickering lights

Hey folks, got me worried here with my 2019 Volvo V90 diesel, it's almost hit the 200K mark. Lately, the lights have been dimming and flickering, and the battery is barely chugging along during start-up. I've got a hunch it might be a faulty vehicle battery sensor. Had a bitter pill to swallow with my last mechanic visit, so I'm trying to avoid that route if possible. Anyone out there faced something similar? What was your experience like at your mechanic? Cheers.

Hey there, I feel ya on the concerning symptoms. A while back my 2016 Volvo V60 had pretty much the same issue. Seems like these Volvos might have a thing for acting up with battery sensors, eh? But seriously, weak starts and flickering lights sound all too familiar. Turned out it was indeed a battery sensor microprocessor that was on the fritz. While it sounds scary, it wasn't too much of a major operation to fix this problem. The mechanic had to replace that sensor - said something about faults messing with the electrical system which caused those issues. Gladly, it wasn't something more serious like the wiring. It definitely needed professional hands though, so I wouldn't exactly put it in the "DIY" category. But, in the grand scheme of things, I'd say it was a fairly routine job for the garage. Hope this eases some of your worry. Good luck with it!

Hey there, really appreciate you sharing your own experience. It does sound uncannily similar to what my old V90 is putting me through right now. It does ease up a bit of my worry though knowing it's not exactly uncharted ground. Just so that I can be prepared for what's coming at me, would you happen to remember roughly how much trickling out of your pocket it ended up being for the sensor replacement? And have you faced any new problems or sensor-related issues since then? Cheers.

Hey, great to hear from you. Yeah, man, I do remember how much it ended up costing for the sensor replacement. My wallet can still feel the pinch - dropped about 315 €. Now, I get that it sounds a bit steep, but let me tell ya, worth every cent. Once the mechanic fixed the defective battery sensor microprocessor and its shenanigans, my V60 has been running like a dream. No lights playing disco, no battery acting like it's got a hangover... nothing. It's been smooth sailing on every trip since that. So in my books, a little bit of an investment for a bunch of peace of mind? Smart move. Hope this helps. Take it easy!

Cheers for the timely response! Seems like your V60 really got its mojo back post your fix, which is totally giving me some respite right now. 315 € does look like quite a handful at first glance, but if it sorts out these pesky flickering lights and almost-dead battery episodes, then it seems like a no-brainer for an investment. Plus, as you rightly said, it's a small price for a peaceful mind and a smooth ride afterwards. Going to have a chat with my local mechanic this weekend and see how it all pans out. Fingers crossed, my V90 gets back on track soon. Thanks again for your insights and I'll tell you how it goes. Take care!
