Vectra Diesel: Dead Brake Light Mystery, Help Needed

Brake light not working

Hey everyone, having some trouble with my '04 Vectra Diesel (296k km) and need your input. My brake light's completely dead, and I'm a bit hesitant to visit the mechanic after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with a faulty brake light signal on these models? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair set you back? Really appreciate any insights on this! Thanks in advance

I had a similar issue with my '07 Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTI last winter. The brake light symptoms were identical. Initially thought it was just a blown bulb, but turned out the wiring harness near the boot lid had worn through due to constant opening/closing movement. Took it to the garage, and they found the insulation was completely stripped in one section, causing a short. Also discovered the brake light switch connector was corroded, pretty common issue on these Vauxhall diesels at high mileage. The fix required rewiring that section and replacing the brake light switch assembly. It was a proper repair job, not just a quick fix. Would definitely recommend getting it checked by a professional since brake lights are a safety feature. My Astra had about 260k km when this happened, so your mileage range fits the typical failure pattern.

Hi, thanks for all the info! Sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing with my Vectra. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you end up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working fine since then, or have you had any other electrical gremlins pop up? Cheers!

Hey again! Just wanted to update you on my Astra situation, turns out I was worried over nothing! When I finally took it to the mechanic, they found out it was just a personal error. You know how these things go sometimes, pretty embarrassing actually! The "Brake light signal implausible" warning has been completely fixed now, and the best part? It didn't cost me a single cent! The mechanic just had a good laugh about it and sorted it out right away. Been driving for months now without any issues. My previous worries about wiring harness and corroded connectors were way off. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one, eh? Just goes to show that not every car problem needs an expensive fix. Hope this helps with your Vectra situation!

Thanks for getting back to me! Well, I finally got the courage to take my Vectra to a local mechanic yesterday. You won't believe it, turned out to be something really minor! The brake light socket had some corrosion buildup, and one of the connectors was loose. The mechanic cleaned it up, secured everything properly, and charged me just £30 for the job. I feel pretty silly now for worrying so much about it. The car's running perfectly, and all lights are working as they should. After my last expensive repair disaster, I was expecting the worst, but this time it worked out great. Sometimes you just need to find the right mechanic, I guess! Really appreciate everyone's input on this. It definitely helped me make the decision to get it checked out rather than letting it drag on. Cheers!
