Vectra's Multiple Warning Lights Point to Cooling Crisis

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hi all, my 2008 Vectra with the petrol engine is giving me headaches. Getting multiple warning signs: engine light, temp gauge in red, low coolant, and a warning in the speedo cluster. I suspect the auxiliary water pump might be failing. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Any tips on diagnostic steps or repair costs would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars and had a similar issue with my 2006 Vauxhall Astra (basically the Vectra's smaller sibling) with the gas engine. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with! My coolant pump cables were shot, and I got all those same warning lights. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. Ended up costing me around 225€ to get the cables replaced on the pump/control unit. Quick fix once they found the problem, and it's been running perfectly since then. Just make sure you don't drive it too much until it's fixed to avoid any engine damage. Which engine variant does your Vectra have? And what's your mileage? This info would help me share more specific details about what to look out for.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Vectra's at 53082 KM, and I just had it serviced last month. I was actually thinking it might be the pump cables too, especially since the symptoms match up perfectly with what you described. That €225 repair cost doesn't sound too bad, was hoping it wouldn't break the bank. Might take it to my local mechanic tomorrow to get it checked out. Did you notice any unusual noises before your pump gave out?

Hey again! Great to hear back from you. Yeah, with your Vectra being at 53K km, it's definitely in the range where these issues can pop up, my Astra was around 60K when I had the same problem. Actually, now that you mention noises, yes! About a week before all the warning lights came on, I started hearing this faint whining sound, especially when the engine was warming up. It wasn't super obvious at first, kind of like a subtle electrical humming sound. But looking back, that was definitely an early warning sign that the pump wasn't happy. The €225 I paid included labor, and my mechanic had it done in about 2-3 hours. Just make sure they check the entire pump assembly while they're at it. Mine ended up needing a new connector as well, but that was included in the total price. One tip I forgot to mention earlier, if your coolant level keeps dropping, keep topping it up until you can get it to the shop. Just don't go on any long trips! I learned that lesson the hard way when I tried pushing it for an extra day and nearly overheated on the highway. Let me know how it goes at the mechanic's! Always interested to hear if it turns out to be the same issue.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You know what's crazy? I actually did notice a weird humming sound last week but didn't think much of it at the time. Now it all makes sense! I've already called my mechanic and got an appointment for tomorrow morning. Been topping up the coolant like you suggested, definitely not risking any highway adventures until it's fixed! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, knowing that you got it sorted for around €225 makes me feel a lot better about the whole situation. I'll update you tomorrow after the mechanic takes a look. Fingers crossed it's just the pump cables like in your case! Thanks again for all your help!
