Vauxhall Insignia Warning Light: Brake Pad Issue?

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hi everyone, my 2011 Vauxhall Insignia (petrol) has started showing a warning light in the speedometer cluster. I suspect it might be related to worn brake pads, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I'd really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what your mechanic found. Any tips on what to look out for? Thanks!

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and had a similar issue with my 2013 Vauxhall Astra last year. The warning light turned out to be exactly what you suspect, worn brake pads. Took it to my local mechanic, and he confirmed the front pads were completely worn down. They also found the discs needed replacing due to uneven wear. The whole job, including parts and labor, cost me around 480€, but it was worth it for safety's sake. What's the mileage on your Insignia? And do you hear any squealing sounds when braking? This info would help me better understand if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Quick tip: Don't wait too long to get it checked out, brake issues aren't something to mess around with!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's at 238451 KM and I had my last service about 3 months ago. Yeah, there's this faint squealing noise when I brake, especially in the morning. I was thinking about getting it checked at my local garage this week. Better safe than sorry, right? Just hoping it won't cost me an arm and a leg like yours did. Did you notice any other symptoms before you got yours fixed?

Hey again! Yeah, I totally remember dealing with this on my Astra. Looking back at your situation, those symptoms sound really familiar, especially that morning squealing noise! That's exactly what mine was doing before I got it sorted. Actually, now that you mention it, I did notice a few other things before getting mine fixed. The brake pedal started feeling a bit spongy, and there was this slight vibration when braking at higher speeds. Also, the braking distance seemed to get longer gradually, I just didn't realize it until after I got the new pads and discs fitted. With your mileage being at 238K, it's definitely worth getting it checked ASAP. My repair bill was on the higher side because I waited a bit too long (my bad!), and the discs were pretty much toast. If you catch it early enough, you might just need the pads replaced, which would be way cheaper. You know what? Try asking your garage if they can do a quick brake inspection before committing to any work. Most places will do this for free or a small fee. That way, you'll know exactly what you're dealing with. Keep us posted on what they find! Always happy to help out a fellow Vauxhall owner.

Thanks so much for all the detailed advice! You've actually made me feel a bit better about the whole situation. I've just called my local garage and they can squeeze me in tomorrow morning for an inspection. You're right about catching it early, I definitely don't want to end up having to replace the discs too! I'll keep an eye out for that spongy brake pedal feeling you mentioned, though I haven't noticed that yet, thankfully. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I'll make sure to update the thread once I know what's going on with mine. Thanks again!
