Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is currently at 166323 KM, and I had my last service about 2 months ago. It started acting up just last week, no warning lights on the dash, it just suddenly stopped responding. The buttons still click normally, but nothing happens when I try to engage it. Your experience with the cable connection sounds promising, at least it wasn't something super expensive! Did your buttons still click normally when you had the issue? I'm hoping it's something similarly straightforward for mine. Was your repair done at a Vauxhall dealer or an independent garage?
Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, my situation was actually pretty similar, my buttons were also clicking normally, just like yours! I took mine to an independent garage (Tony's Auto in Manchester, they're pretty good with Vauxhalls) rather than the dealer because, you know, dealer prices can be crazy sometimes! With your mileage being similar to what mine was when it happened (I was around 155,000 km), it really does sound like the same issue. The funny thing is, my mechanic said these cable connections often start acting up right around that mileage mark on Vauxhalls. Something about the constant movement of the steering column eventually wearing down the connection. Just to add to what I mentioned before, when they fixed mine, they actually showed me the worn-out cable. It was pretty obvious once they pointed it out, you could see where it had started fraying. The repair was really straightforward, which is why it only took about an hour. One thing I'd recommend, since you've had your service recently, maybe check if it's still under any service warranty? Might save you some money if it is! Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. I'm pretty confident it'll be the same issue given how similar our symptoms are!
Thanks so much for all the detailed information! That's really helpful to know about the cable wearing out around this mileage, makes total sense with the constant movement. I checked my service warranty and unfortunately, it just expired last month (typical timing, right?). I actually know a good independent garage nearby that specializes in Vauxhalls, so I think I'll give them a call tomorrow. The price you mentioned seems pretty reasonable, especially compared to dealer rates. It's definitely put my mind at ease knowing it's likely just a worn cable rather than something more serious. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's exactly the kind of real-world feedback I was hoping for! I'll probably get it sorted next week, and I'll keep your advice in mind. Thanks again!
Hey there! I have some experience with cars (low experience, mostly basic maintenance). I had a similar issue with my 2018 Vauxhall Mokka (also had a 2019 Astra before). My cruise control completely died, and it turned out to be a faulty cable connection near the steering column. Took it to my local garage last summer, they diagnosed and fixed it in about an hour. Cost me around 95€, which included diagnosis and repair. Can you share more details about when this started happening? Did you notice any warning lights on the dash? Also, what's your mileage? This could help determine if it's the same issue I had. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more info.
