Unusual symptoms in the 2018 VW Arteon: black smoke, check engine light and more

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Hey guys, I'm pretty worried about my 2018 VW Arteon, gasoline, with 105,678 km on the clock. Recently it started showing some unusual symptoms. For example: black smoke when accelerating, check engine light on, engine losing power, uneven engine running, jerking when accelerating and the fuel consumption also seems to be higher. Somehow I have the suspicion that the defect could be in the lambda sensor heater. Have any of you ever had a similar problem? What was your experience with the mechanic? I'm honestly quite nervous because I didn't have a good experience the last time I went to the garage. Would really appreciate any helpful answers and personal experiences!

Hey, I had a very similar problem with my 2015 VW Passat last year. There were also symptoms such as uneven engine running and increased fuel consumption. The mechanic then identified the engine control unit as the cause. So not the lambda sensor heater at all, as you might think. It's definitely not a problem that should be taken lightly, but it's not the end of the world either. A skilled mechanic should get to grips with it quite quickly. Of course, every repair is annoying, but hey, that's the way it is with our cars, right? Good luck getting the problem fixed quickly. Take it easy, it'll be fine!

Hi, it really sounds like you've had quite an odyssey with your VW Arteon. Thanks for the input regarding the engine control unit, that gives me some new food for thought. Do you happen to remember how deep you had to dig into your pocket for it and whether any additional problems have cropped up since then? I just want to be as prepared as possible the next time I go to the garage.

Hey, of course I remember. I got my Passat back on the road again for a hefty €1000. But since the mechanic repaired the engine control unit, no further problems have arisen. By the way, the suspicion about the lambda sensor heating was also confirmed in my case and was rectified. It cost extra, but since then my car has been as good as new. So don't worry too much. Good luck and stay relaxed!

Thank you very much, that really helps me. I'll factor in a little more than €1000 if the same problems are actually present. I'm reassured to know that everything was fine with your car afterwards. I'll definitely keep the issue with the lambda sensor heater in mind. Hopefully I'll be lucky with my garage this time. Your words have really encouraged me, thank you again! Now I feel prepared for my next visit to the mechanic. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
