Unpredictable gearshift and engine light in Citroen C2 from 2003

Hi folks, I've recently started having problems with my old darling, a 2003 Citroen C2 with a gasoline engine and a whopping 194,050 km on the clock. The car is actually still doing its job, but for some time now it's been acting up... The engine light is on and the gearbox shifts strangely or jumps back and forth unpredictably. My gut feeling tells me that it could possibly be a fault with the gearbox selector lever. Have any of you ever had something similar and how did it go when you took the car to the garage? My last experience at the mechanic was anything but rosy... I'm really curious to see if you have any tips or experiences for me. Best regards.

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Citroen C2 is experiencing issues with an unpredictable gearshift and an illuminated engine light. The suspected cause is a faulty gearbox selector lever, possibly due to a damaged cable connection. A similar case with a Citroen C3 was resolved by replacing the cable connection, which improved the car's performance. It is recommended to visit a garage for repairs to prevent the problem from worsening.

Hello, gosh, that sounds familiar. I drive a 2006 Citroen C3 that had similar problems. When the engine light came on and the gearbox started shifting strangely, my first assumption was that the gear selector was faulty. I took the car to the garage at the time and, as you suspected, it was indeed the case - the cable connection on the selector lever was damaged. The mechanic had to take it out and replace it because there was no way to repair the damage. Definitely makes a big difference when it works properly. Would recommend you go to the garage as soon as possible as it will only get worse if you ignore it. Hope this helps you. All the best!

Hey, oh dear, that sounds pretty much exactly what I was afraid of. Seems like a trip to the garage is unavoidable. Do you remember how much the whole thing cost you when your gear selector had to be replaced? And have you had any problems since then, or was it fixed? Many thanks and best regards.

Hey, of course I can only speak from my own experience. I spent €365 to have the broken cable connection on the selector lever repaired and everything has been running like clockwork ever since. The guys at the garage said that this is a known problem - but if I hadn't had it fixed, it would probably only have got worse. So, my absolute recommendation is to have it done! Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Hey, thanks for the quick response and the info. It's not exactly cheap, but if it helps, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet. My old car is worth it to me. I'll make an appointment at the garage and hopefully everything will go as smoothly as it did for you. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again and best wishes!
