Unpredictable Engine Shut-Off and Electrical Issues in 2016 Kia Optima

ABS/DSC system is not working

|

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

Engine shuts off by itself

|

Dim or flickering lights

Hey, got a bit of a concern here with my 2016 Kia Optima, runs on gasoline, with around 136K on the clock. Recently, it's started shutting the engine off on its own, messing around with the ABS/DSC, dimming lights at unusual times, and showing a weak battery during startup. I've got this vibe it might be to do with the generator. My last visit to the mechanic was a nightmare, so kinda anxious. Anyone had a similar issue and got some tips or feedback on their mechanic experience to share?

Hey, yeah, I hear ya. Reminds me when I had to lug my 2013 Kia Sorento down to the garage last year. I had some sketchy stuff going on too, lights dimming, engine going doolally, dash throwing up a "Generator Defective" alert. Almost the same as you described, so don't fret too much. Mechanic did a proper inspection, turns out my alternator needed some work. The poor sod was kaput, not charging the battery properly which was mucking up all the electricals. Fixing it's what solved all those bizarre symptoms. So, you're right about your hunch. Have your mechanic check the alternator thoroughly, might need a replacement. In my case, the issue was pretty serious, I mean, it was messing up my car’s electrics after all, but once fixed, not had a single problem from my Sorento since. Good luck! Hope it works out smoother for ya!

Hey there, thanks for sharing your story, really seems like we're in the same boat with our Kias. It's crazy how one part can mess everything up. Glad your Sorento is running smooth now. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you had to shell out for the alternator fix? And since the repair, have you noticed anything else acting funny or is she running like a dream?

Hey, happy to help! So, for getting that dodgy generator sorted, it set me back about 960 Euro. Now I know it ain't small change, but considering the mess it was causing, it was worth every penny. And the best part is, since the repair, my Sorento's been behaving wonderfully. No more unusual dimming lights, no sudden engine cut-offs or any of that nonsense. Feels good to have her running as smooth as butter again. Just goes to show you never really know with cars until you look under the hood, huh? So get your Optima checked out and hopefully, it'll sort out just like mine did. Good luck with it!

Hey, appreciate the advice and sharing your experience — it does provide me with some reassurance. It's quite the dent in the wallet, but I agree, if it means getting my Optima back in tip-top shape, it'll be worth it. I'm glad your Sorento hasn't given you any more grief. Cars are funny like that, indeed! One problem on the surface, but the actual issue is somewhere else. Anyway, I'll get my girl into the garage and have that alternator looked into. Hopefully, she'll be back on the road soon. Cheers!
