Unexpected shifting problems and noises with Toyota Fortuner 2012

Whining or grinding noises

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hi guys, I have a problem with my Toyota Fortuner petrol engine from 2012 with a mileage of around 83025 KM. When driving, there are often uncontrolled gear changes, when changing gear it usually grinds and then there are these whistling or grinding noises. I've had trouble with my gear selection indicator in the past, could it be related to this? Have you ever experienced anything like this and what are your experiences with garages with such things? Thanks already, guys!

Hello, I'm not a mechanic, but I had a similar problem with my 2015 Toyota 4Runner. The car often jumped out of gear in the middle of driving and made strange noises, apparently the wiring harness was faulty. I had to have it completely replaced in the workshop because that was the only way to solve the problem permanently. And yes, it can lead to major problems if this fault is not rectified. It can permanently affect the performance and safety of your car. So if I were you, I would take it to the garage as soon as possible. Even if it's annoying, but I'd rather have that than more damage, you know? I hope this helps you a little. All the best!

Hey, man, that really sounds like a similar problem to the one I have with my Fortuner. The wiring harness thing seems to make sense to me too, it could well be that's what it comes down to for me. To be honest, it's really annoying right now - I didn't need it. Do you remember how much it cost you in the workshop? And did anything else come up afterwards, or was everything okay again? I hope it's okay to ask, I just want to get a feel for what I'm in for. Thanks for the feedback, that was very helpful!

Hey, I can well understand that this is really annoying. Car problems are always inconvenient. But yes, fixing this wiring harness fault was the right step. It cost me €180, which is no mean feat, but since then my Toyota has been running smoothly again. The issue with the gear selector display was also resolved after it was fixed in the workshop and I no longer had any problems with it. It was like a new car! I hope that your Fortuner will soon be fit again and will no longer annoy you. No thanks, always happy to help!

Hey, what a relief to hear that your Toyota is running smoothly again and that your problems have been fixed. That's really reassuring, even if €180 is not a small amount of money. But if it helps and everything is fine again afterwards, I'll certainly put up with it. I love the way you described it - it was like a new car! - That's exactly the feeling I'd like to have again. Thank you very much for your advice and kind words! I'll probably have to visit my trusted garage now and hope that I'll be able to say that afterwards: It's like a new car! See you soon and thanks again for your support!
