Weird engine noise

Subject: Weird Noises and Oil Light On - 2018 V60 - Any ideas? Hey folks, My 2018 Volvo V60 (petrol engine) with about 150k KM on the clock started acting up lately. Got this pesky oil light flickering, some odd engine noise I can't put my finger on, valve adjustment clatter, and – wait for it – glittery metal shavings in the oil! Seriously thinking it's something to do with the engine oil pressure system malfunctioning. Last mechanic trip was a nightmare, so not keen on going through that again. Anyone dealt with something similar? How did your mechanic handle it? All advice appreciated. Cheers!

Hey there, Funny you mention that because I ran into almost the same problem with my 2015 Volvo S60, just a few years back. Yep, the oil light starting flickering and I could hear a weird noise that was hard to pinpoint too. Turned out it was indeed an issue with the engine oil pressure system - a defective oil pump to be precise. The oil pump had started to fail which was causing both low oil pressure (hence the dashboard light) and that unusual engine noise. Like your case, I discovered glittery metal shavings in the oil which your gut feeling is right about - it's a red flag! Those are usually a pretty solid (no pun intended) indicator of excessive engine wear which shouldn't be happening in our cars. So yeah, this is likely not a small issue, but don't panic. It's indeed serious, but not hopeless, I promise. After initially freaking out, I got my oil pump replaced at the garage. The mechanic did a fantastic job, replaced the faulty pump, and gave the engine a good once over to make sure no other components were damaged. I'm not going to lie, it was a decent amount of work, but it completely sorted out the issue. My old S60 is running like a champ now, I've had no further oil pressure problems or any unusual engine noises since then. I know mechanic trips can sometimes be a hassle, but trust me, you don't wanna leave this unattended. Get that oil pump checked out and if necessary, replaced. Good luck!

Hey! Looks like our Volvos are playing the same tune. Had some similar issues with my 2017 V60, especially the blinking oil light. Took me a while to diagnose it, but ended up being the oil pressure system like in your S60. I've got to ask though, do you happen to recall how hard your wallet cried after getting your oil pump replaced? I'm trying to ballpark the damage for my own prep. And have there been any other related gremlins popping up since you got it fixed? Fingers crossed here, I'm hoping nothing else comes up. Thanks a bunch!

Hey, Yeah, the whole oil pressure system glitch sure gives a hard-knock life to our wallets, doesn't it? I totally get you trying to brace for the hit. For my old S60, the bill rang up to about €755.0. That cost included replacing the defective oil pump and a thorough check-up of the engine to ensure there were no other lurking issues. I remember my heart sinking a bit when I first saw the price, but let me tell you, it was money well-invested. My car has been purring like a satisfied cat since that repair. No more pesky oil light, no more strange sounds hitching a ride with me, just smooth sailing and a peace of mind. So yeah, it might sting a bit in the beginning, but I can tell you first hand it's a fix that's definitely worth every penny. Just remember, you're not just paying for a repair, you're investing in the longevity of your ride. Cheer up, fella! Here's hoping your V60 gets back to tip-top shape soon.

Hey, Appreciating your advice and sharing your experience! Seems like we Volvo owners have this knack for sticking together when it comes to these hitches, huh? Your €755figure certainly gave me a slight shudder, haha. But hearing that it's an investment for a peaceful (and noise-free) driving does alleviate the sting a bit. After all, love everything about the V60 minus this bickering oil light and noise; should be worth it. Alright then, time to bite the bullet. Gonna get the car checked out this weekend, fingers crossed that the problem would be resolved as yours did. Hats off to you for keeping me from sliding into panic mode. Cheers! Appreciate ya dropping some wisdom on me. Hoping the V60 gets its mojo back soon.
