Turbo Failure Symptoms? QX Owner Needs Urgent Help

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Loud hissing on acceleration

Check engine light on

Whistling noise

Strong exhaust smell

Hi everyone, my 2019 Infiniti QX diesel is acting up lately. Getting black smoke when I step on the gas, engine's losing power and jerking during acceleration. There's also this hissing/whistling sound and my fuel consumption has gone through the roof. Engine light is on and there's a strong exhaust smell. I suspect it might be related to boost pressure control, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and had a similar issue with my 2017 Infiniti Q50 diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through. In my case, it turned out to be a damaged wiring harness connected to the boost pressure actuator. Got it fixed at my local Infiniti dealership they replaced the wiring harness and it cost me around 155€. Car's been running perfectly since then. Could you share your engine code and mileage? This would help me give you more specific advice, as different engine variants might have slightly different setups. Also, while these symptoms often point to boost pressure issues in Infinitis, it's best to get it properly diagnosed to be sure. If this sounds similar, I'd recommend getting it checked ASAP to prevent any further damage.

Thanks for your insight! My mileage is at 216528 KM and had my last service about 2 months ago. I actually just checked the engine code using my 's scanner it's showing P0299. Your boost pressure actuator issue sounds spot on with what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any warning lights before the complete failure? I'm wondering if I should risk driving it to the dealer or just get it towed to avoid any engine damage. Really hope it's just the wiring harness like in your case!

Hey again! Yeah, I totally remember dealing with that P0299 code on my Q50 it's the classic underboost condition warning. To answer your question about the warning lights yes, I did get them, but I initially ignored them for about a week (big mistake!). The check engine light came on first, and then the performance started getting worse gradually. Looking at your mileage (mine was around 198,000 km when it happened), I'd strongly recommend getting it towed. I actually tried driving mine to the dealer and ended up having to pull over because the car went into limp mode super scary on a busy road! Not worth the risk, trust me. While in my case it was just the wiring harness, the symptoms can also point to other boost-related issues. The fact that you're getting the same code and symptoms as I did is promising though hopefully it's just the wiring harness for you too. Much better than having to replace the whole turbo unit, which was what I was initially worried about! Let me know how it goes at the dealer. Fingers crossed it's a simple fix like mine was!

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! You've definitely convinced me to play it safe and get it towed. Just called the dealer and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning they're sending a tow truck in a couple of hours. Better to spend a bit on towing than risk more expensive repairs! Really relieved to hear that your issue was resolved with just a wiring harness replacement. I was starting to worry about needing a whole new turbo, which would've been a nightmare for my budget right now. The similar mileage and error code definitely gives me hope that it's the same problem. I'll update you once I get the diagnosis from the dealer. Thanks again for sharing your experience it's been super helpful in making me feel less anxious about the whole situation!
