Troubleshooting tips sought for electric steering column adjustment in a BMW 1 Series petrol engine (2016)

Electric steering column adjustment without function

Hi guys, I have a small problem with my 2016 BMW 1 Series petrol engine. The electric steering column adjustment is acting up. I suspect that the motor for the steering column adjustment is faulty, but I'm not entirely sure. Have any of you ever experienced something like this and can give me some troubleshooting tips? I am particularly interested in what was done in the workshop to rectify the problem and what came out of it. Many thanks in advance!

Moin mate, I had a similar problem with my 2014 BMW 1 series model, so around the same age as yours. Don't worry, I'm not a car mechanic or anything, but I do have a bit of an idea. At my garage, they then discovered that the control unit was faulty. Unfortunately, it wasn't a cheap repair. It cost me around 1000 euros. If that's the case for you too, I'm really sorry for you. Do you do regular maintenance? And did your car show any unusual symptoms before the problem occurred? I might be able to help you with a little more information.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply! I have always kept up with the regular maintenance, the last service was at 98300 km. This was shortly before the problem occurred. I haven't noticed anything unusual, except that the steering column has sometimes been a bit shaky. But that didn't seem worrying to me. If the ECU is the problem, then it's probably going to be an expensive affair. Oh my goodness, that really hurts... But thank you for the information, that helps!

Oh man, that doesn't sound good... but no problem, that's what we're here for, to help each other! Well, here's what happened with my car: when the ECU failed, the steering wheel adjuster started spinning around. It started pretty much exactly as you described. First it clicked and then it stopped working. I'm guessing you might have the same problem. My advice is to get it checked at the garage soon, as it could be dangerous if you're driving and can't adjust the steering wheel correctly. I was told that usually the whole control unit has to be replaced, which is quite expensive.... unfortunately. But maybe you are lucky and only a small repair is needed. Keep your fingers crossed! I'm really sorry I don't have any better news. But at least now you know where you stand. Good luck, buddy! And please give us an update when you know more.

Hi, thanks again for your help and the detailed explanation. That helps me enormously, even if the news isn't exactly the best. But hey, better to know than to be in the dark, isn't it? I'll take your advice and get the car to the garage as soon as possible. Hopefully I'll have a bit of luck and the repair won't be quite so expensive... I'll be sure to give you an update as soon as I know more. Thanks again to you and everyone who took the time to reply to me! Take care and ride safe!

Hello, Has the adjustment switch itself been checked to see if there is a fault? On my 5 Series only the switch itself was defective and has been replaced. MFG
