Troubleshooting Increased Fuel Consumption and Failed DPF Regeneration in 2014 Hyundai Porter Diesel Engine

DPF regeneration failure

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey! I'm having a bit of a headache with my 2014 Hyundai Porter with a Diesel engine. On giving a throttle, it's spitting out black smoke and losing power, the check engine light is on, and it's running pretty rough. Worst of all, DPF regeneration seems to fail constantly and my fuel consumption has shot right up. I'm suspecting it could be a problem with low differential pressure in the diesel particulate filter. Has anyone experienced this and managed to fix it? Would love to hear your experience and how you solved it at your local garage. Any troubleshooting suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I've got some experience with cars, but I'm no expert. I actually ran into a similar issue with my 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe - same family, just a different model. The problem was a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. I took it to my local workshop and the mechanic there was pretty thorough. He did a diagnostic test and discovered the faulty sensor. After that, it was pretty much a straightforward fix - a quick replacement of the bad sensor. Set me back around 250€ though. While your problem does sound similar to mine, it might be a bit different given the different model and the DPF regeneration issue. What's the mileage on your Porter and are there any noticeable irregularities in engine operation besides what you've already mentioned? The best advice I can give you from my experience is to get it to the shop and have it checked out as soon as possible. The longer you ignore it, the worse it can get. Good luck!

Hi there, I appreciate the response and valuable advice. My ride has clocked 70872 KM so far. Apart from the issues I already mentioned, the only other thing I can think of is a bit of an odd smell when the engine's running. Kind of like burning. Not sure if that's related or something different altogether. I guess I'll follow your footsteps. Let's see what my local garage finds out. I hope it's not too heavy on the pocket though! Thanks again, you've been a great help! Cheers!

Hey! I'm glad you found my previous message useful. That burning smell could definitely be related to your engine problems. It could be a sign of excess fuel burning in the engine, which, guess what? It might be causing the black smoke and the high fuel consumption as well. When the sensor in my Santa Fe was faulty, I remember getting a similar smell, but not as noticeable. Each car reacts differently, I guess... The mileage on your Porter is quite decent for a 2014 model; these kinds of problems can arise when the vehicle is pretty much "broken-in". I remember my mechanic saying that faulty sensors, or a clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF), can cause DPF regeneration issues. However, sometimes, DPF regeneration failure can even be caused by not driving at high enough speeds over long distances. Your Porter might just need a good run on the highway! I crossed my fingers that the fixing won't cost you an arm and a leg. Hope your local garage can find and fix the problem without charging too much! Good luck! Let us know how it turns out!

Hey! I can't thank you enough for the insight! Yeah, it's been pretty broken-in and has seen a fair bit of road. The smell has been bothering me, glad to hear it could be related. I never thought about the high speed long-distance driving thing though, that's something to think about. Transporting it to the garage tomorrow. Fingers crossed it won't cost me too much. Your advice has been a lifesaver! Will definitely keep you posted on how it turns out. Cheers!
