Troubleshooting Cold Start Issues and Weak Battery in a 2010 Ford Taurus

Weak battery when starting the engine

Dim or flickering lights

Weird engine noise

Car won't start

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Longer cold start time

Hey everyone! I'm dealing with a pretty weird issue with my 2010 Ford Taurus with a gasoline engine. Basically, it's taking a ton longer to start in the cold and sometimes won't even kick over at all. There's also a strange engine noise, and the battery seems weak when I'm trying to start it. Add to this, dim or flickering lights and warning light on the speedometer. I suspect the engine might not be starting properly but I'd love to hear your thoughts or any experiences you've had with similar issues. Anyone know what could be causing these problems and how to fix 'em? Really appreciate any tips or advice you've got on troubleshooting this issue.

Hey there! So, I've got some experience with cars, not a mechanic but I've solved a couple of issues on my own. Had a very similar situation with my 2008 Ford Fusion. It seemed like a battery problem at first, but it turned out to be a defective starter motor just like yours. Took it to my local workshop, they identified the starter as the culprit, managed the repairs in no time. Cost about 565€, not cheap, but solved the problem! Haven't had the same issue since then. Now, there could be other reasons for slow starting, so it's good to check everything. Your Taurus uses a gasoline engine, right? Would you mind also sharing your current mileage? It would be easier to give further advice with this additional info. Cheers!

Hey! Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. Yeah, it's a gasoline engine. The mileage on it is 59814 KM. Had it last serviced a few months back. I'll look into the starter motor like you said, might be the culprit here. Cheers!

Hi again! With that mileage and considering the symptoms, the starter does indeed seem to be a likely candidate. Considering its behavior especially in cold weather, this might point towards a failing starter solenoid. The sluggishness in starting might be caused by the solenoid not properly engaging with the flywheel when you try to crank the engine. The warning lights and dimming could also be due to the starter drawing excessive current, straining your electrical system. Definitely, get it checked out as a failing starter can cause damage to other parts of your engine over time. Don't want a simple defect becoming a major hassle down the road! Good luck with the troubleshooting keep us updated!

Hey, that makes total sense! I really hadn't considered the solenoid. I'll definitely have it checked out and see if that's the problem. I certainly don't want this turning into a bigger issue. Appreciate the advice and sure thing, I'll keep everyone updated on how it goes! Cheers!
