Troubleshooting black smoke, power loss and engine noise in a Peugeot 407 Diesel from 2008

Loud hissing on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Shaking while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Whistling noise

Stalling while idling

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Hey guys, my 2008 Peugeot 407 Diesel is having some strange problems. The car smokes black when accelerating, the check engine light is on, it loses power, runs rough, jerks when accelerating, hisses loudly, dies at idle and also shudders at idle. There is also a whistling noise. I suspect faults in the boost pressure system. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? How did you get this solved in the workshop and what were your experiences? Looking forward to your tips and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hello folks! I am by no means a car professional, but I do have a bit of experience. Your problem sounds very similar to what I experienced some time ago with my 2006 Peugeot 405 diesel. The whistling noise and loss of power could be due to mechanical damage to the turbocharger. I went to my local garage for the repair, where they replaced the turbocharger. It cost me a total of 1070 euros, but afterwards my car ran like clockwork again! It's a pretty expensive repair, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet... To be able to help you better, I would need to know a bit more about your vehicle. Have you made any modifications or repairs recently? Are there any other symptoms you've noticed? Anything you can tell me about it could be useful!

Hey, thanks for your reply! Yeah, your case sounds really similar to mine. So far I haven't changed or repaired anything on my 407, it's just had its usual service runs. The last service was at 116033 km and there was nothing special to report. But I guess I'll have to consider the turbocharger too. 1070 euros isn't cheap, but you have to live with it somehow if you want the car to run smoothly again. I'll see what my garage has to say. Hopefully I won't cost myself too much... Thanks again for the tip!

No problem, I'm happy to help! Yes, it definitely sounds like the turbocharger could be the problem, especially if you had similar symptoms to me. The price for the replacement was quite high for me too, but afterwards my Peugeot ran like new again. I can understand that it's a bit worrying, but it might be worth it if you want to avoid the problem getting worse. Also have a look at the mass airflow sensor and injectors if you haven't already. Sometimes this can also lead to similar problems. I hope your garage will help you solve the problem. Good luck! And let me know if you have any other questions or would like to share your experiences.

Hey, great, thanks again for the helpful tips and support! I'll definitely keep that in mind. Mass air flow sensor and injectors are also good points that I should perhaps have checked. Really hope it's nothing too serious and the cost will be limited... Well, I'll definitely keep you posted when I have more detailed information from my garage. See you then and thanks again for the help!
