Loss of engine power

Hey! I'm having a bit of trouble with my 2011 Hyundai Grandeur, Gasoline engine. Lately, I've noticed the check engine light is on, the engine randomly shuts off and has lost some of its power, it's tougher to start when it's cold, and sometimes it won't even start at all. The engine's pretty unstable too. I'm thinking it could be a camshaft sensor issue. Has anyone else experienced this with their Hyundai? If yes, how did you guys go about fixing this? What tips do you have for troubleshooting? All help is appreciated, thanks!

Hey there, I'm no expert mechanic but I do have some car experience as I fix minor issues with my own cars. I had a very similar problem with my 2009 Hyundai Sonata (a bit like your Grandeur). The problem was indeed with the sensor wheel on the camshafts. Took it to my local garage (great by the way), and they were able to run a diagnostic check which confirmed my suspicions. In case you have an OBD2 scanner, you can try doing it yourself. Just keep in mind that it might also be a wiring issue or PCM, so a proper diagnosis is always recommended. For me, the solution was replacing the camshaft sensor wheel. The total price was around 695€ - parts, labor, and a bit of coffee for the mechanics included. However, I'll need a bit more info about your vehicle (specifics like mileage, last service, etc.) to provide more help. Hang in there it can be sorted!

Hey there, thanks so much for your help! You're totally right about getting a proper diagnosis. I've clocked in at around 65667 KM on my Grandeur, had it serviced last about an year back. I'll try to run an OBD2 scan as per your advice. I really appreciate your insights. Fingers crossed it's just the camshaft sensor wheel and not a more serious issue. Hope to keep this old beast running for a few more years. Cheers!

No worries glad to help! Based on what you said, I'd definitely stick with getting that OBD2 scan. If you've got the same issue that I had with my Sonata, you should be seeing a P0340 or P0341 error code. With such low mileage for a 2011 model, it does strengthen the likelihood of it being a camshaft sensor wheel issue. Also, if the last service was about a year ago, some parts may be simply due for a replacement given their lifetime. In my experience, post-replacement, the car drove like a dream. Literally, all those problems you mentioned (engine light, power loss, cold start difficulty) disappeared. Of course, each car is a unique case, but I can tell you, that little sensor wheel going wonky can really stir things up. Let's hope it is indeed just the camshaft sensor issue for you as well. Keep those fingers crossed and remember, the ol' beasts can surprise us with their durability! Best of luck and keep us posted!

Crikey, I learned a lot from your advice! Can't thank you enough! I'll definitely start with the OBD2 scan and check for the P0340 or P0341 error code. I do hope it's just a simple replacement needed. Your experience certainly gives me hope and it's encouraging to hear your Sonata ran like a dream post-replacement. Exactly what I want for my Grandeur. Will surely update you once I've diagnosed the issue. Thanks a ton again for your help! You're a lifesaver. Keep those tips coming. Cheers!
