Car won't start

Hey all, having issues with my 2016 Triton diesel. Engine's giving black smoke during acceleration, hard to start when cold, and DPF keeps failing to regenerate. The pre-glow light stays on and there's noticeable vibration at idle. Sometimes won't start at all. I suspect the glow control unit might be faulty. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Really interested in hearing what repairs were done and which workshop managed to fix it properly. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport diesel (pretty close to your Triton as they share many components). I have some experience working on cars, but I left this one to the pros. Had exactly those symptoms, black smoke, hard starts, and glow plug drama. Turned out the wiring harness connecting the glow control unit to the ECU was damaged. Got it fixed at my local Mitsubishi dealer, cost me around 155€ for the repair including parts and labor. Car's been running like a charm since then. Before I can give more specific advice, could you share: How many miles/km on your Triton? Have you had any previous repairs related to this? Are you getting any specific error codes? Drop these details and I'll try to help further!

Thanks for the info! My Triton's at 124717 KM and just had a service last month. I'm not getting any specific error codes, but these symptoms started about three weeks ago. Good to know about that wiring harness issue you had, might be worth checking out. Dealer prices are a bit steep around here though. Did you notice if the problem got worse in cold weather before you got it fixed?

Hey again! Yeah, I absolutely noticed it was worse in cold weather with my Pajero Sport! Actually, thinking back now, the problems were way more noticeable during winter mornings. The black smoke was like a fog machine and the shaking was enough to rattle your teeth out! I initially tried to save some cash by going to a local mechanic, but they couldn't properly diagnose it. Ended up wasting about 200€ on parts that didn't fix the issue. So honestly, even though the dealer price seemed steep at first, it was worth every cent to get it sorted properly the first time. One thing I forgot to mention in my previous reply, before I got the wiring harness fixed, I noticed the fuel consumption went through the roof. Are you experiencing that too? Also, if you're worried about dealer prices, maybe try calling around different Mitsubishi dealers? I found prices can vary quite a bit between them. Just don't wait too long to get it checked out. I learned the hard way that these symptoms can lead to bigger (and more expensive) problems if left unchecked! Let me know how you get on with it!

Thanks heaps for all that detailed information! You're right about the fuel consumption, I've definitely noticed I'm filling up more often lately. And yeah, these cold mornings we've been having are making it act up even worse. I'll take your advice and start calling around different dealers to compare prices. Might be worth the extra cash to get it done right the first time, especially after hearing about your experience with the local mechanic. Better than throwing money at parts that might not fix the issue. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Think I'll book it in next week before it gets any worse. Don't fancy being stuck with bigger problems down the track! I'll update you on how it goes once I get it sorted. Thanks again!
