Tips needed: Troubleshooting starting difficulties and lock problems with the 2008 BMW 7 Series gasoline engine

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Car won't start

Locking/Unlocking issue

Hey guys, I need a little help with my 2008 BMW 7 series gasoline engine (already 200,212 km on the clock). I've recently started having problems driving it: Warning light in the speedometer, problems with locking and unlocking and the thing just won't start. I'm worried that it could be a faulty Hall sensor for the ignition key. Unfortunately, I didn't have a great experience at my last visit to the mechanic. Have any of you experienced something similar and could give me a tip on the best way to proceed to avoid being ripped off again? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had similar problems with my 2011 BMW 5 Series. The symptoms were almost the same, the warning light flashed and it wouldn't start. It turned out to be the ignition coil and not the Hall sensor. After replacing it, it ran like clockwork again. It was a serious issue, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. I would say you should see another mechanic if you didn't feel you were treated well last time. Have a quick look at the ignition coil, or have them check if there's a problem with your ignition switch. Hope this helps and you don't get ripped off again! Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the tip! Ignition coil, so I wouldn't have guessed that at first. Do you happen to remember the cost of the repair? And have there been any other problems with the car since then or was that the solution par excellence? I'd just like to be as well prepared as possible before I go to the next mechanic.

Hey, I'm glad if I can help! In my case, it was around 600 euros to repair the control unit. It was quite a lot of money, but since then the car has been running smoothly again. And I haven't had any further problems since then. But above all - and this is the good news - the fault with the Hall sensor for the ignition key was rectified after the visit to the mechanic. So it doesn't seem to be the same problem for you if you have the same symptoms. But of course, you never know. In any case, I've got my fingers crossed that you don't have the same stress as I did back then. Good luck with your next visit to the mechanic!

Great, thanks again for your help and information, that reassures me a bit! I wouldn't have expected the 600 euros, but if it helps and everything runs smoothly again, I would of course pay it. Better than the constant uncertainty. I'll probably make an appointment soon and hope it's not the same problem. But it's good to know that it doesn't necessarily have to be the Hall sensor. I will report back! Thanks again and keep your fingers crossed for me.
