The convertible roof of a 2002 BMW 5 Series cannot be opened: Experiences and advice wanted

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Convertible top cannot be opened or closed

Hello everyone! I have a small problem with my 2002 BMW 5 Series (diesel, 251471 km run). My convertible roof won't open or close and a warning light in the speedometer is constantly flashing. I didn't have a good experience the last time I went to the garage and think the problem may be related to a defect in the rear window sunblind. Have any of you had similar problems and can report on your experience with the mechanic? Thank you!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 1999 BMW 3 series last month. The mechanic told me that the problem was not with the sunblind, but the roof itself needed to be checked. He determined that a sensor in the roof system needed to be replaced. It was no joke, but luckily it wasn't as serious as I initially feared. Depending on your particular problem, it could be something similar. Best to get it checked as soon as possible.

Hey, interesting that you had a similar problem, but it was with the roof itself, not the sunblind. Can you remember roughly how much it cost you to replace the sensor? And has anything else come up since then, or has it been running smoothly ever since? Thank you in advance!

Hey, yes, I still remember the costs well. Replacing the sensor wasn't the only problem in my case. I also had a defective control unit. The fun cost me a whopping €1000. Ain't no bargain, that's what I meant! But since then everything has been fine - no light on the dashboard or other strange things. And the sun blind on the rear window? It wasn't found properly the first time I took it to the garage, but when I had it checked again, it was quickly fixed. So far, so good and you might want to point these problems out to your mechanic. Hopefully it will help!

Hey man! That sounds expensive, but I'm glad to hear your car has been running smoothly since then. Thanks for the tip, I will definitely let my mechanic know about these issues. Your experience will help me a lot on my next trip to the garage. I really hope the fault is not in the control unit. Thanks again for your help!

Hello, Have you been able to solve your problem? With my 5 Series from the same series, it was also due to the sensors and my mechanic said that the rails were very dirty and cleaned them for you as a hint. Greetings Daniel
